The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Asperger Syndrome is classified as a spectrum disorder and a form of autism. The main character of this novel shares his perspective with the reader. Overwhelmed by sensory input, especially in new surroundings, he constantly battles to balance extensive light, noises, smells, tastes, and touches. As he processes the millions of details in an experience, he learns at times to modify his behavior by shutting down his senses.
He explains in extremely descriptive scenes how he processes information in pictures rather than through language. For example, if he is introduced to a stranger in a bus station, the visual overload of the graphics and words on the man's t-shirt combined with the signage ads surrounding him could cause the character to cover his ears and/or close his eyes, or seek a place to hide. His picture way of thinking processes all the information with the same intensity of significance. This is a very insightful book for anyone interested in seeing through another eyes.
