top WAR WAR2 movie He was "blackmailed' into spying~
Review created: 01/23/08

William Holden in on of his better roles as a swedish diplomat working in the Oil industry before the start of WW2 an american living in Sweden. The Brits "blackmail" him into spying for them using his "contacts" inside Germany. We dislike Eric Erickson (Holden ) from the start. he is only to himself and money. As he travels deep into Nazi Germany he encounters a loyal german spy (Lilli Palmer) as the lovely Countess who for religious reasons is willing to help the allies spy. Shot in Germany based on the Alexander Klein's book the TRUE tale of the loyal and germans who are willing to spy but know they will die if caught. clever on Holdens trail are two Gestapo agents who he has to elude while trying to escape. Excellent plot it flows and we are not bored. the Best part is watching Holdens TRANSFORMATION FROM the ever so "I only care about myself" to a person willing to spy because he knows it will help end the war a little sooner and he then earns our respect~!also worth watching....the kid who needs a spanking is the Nazi Hans....he IS good~ we see the Nazi propaganda pounded into his little head and how it affects HIM~ beautiful scenery and the costumes are outstanding. Lilli Palmer is wonderful as a woman who cannot run from her own conscience~ one of the BEST spy movies out of WW2 I give it a solid 9 out of 10. See also Stalag 17 and the Great Escape.

  The Counterfeit Traitor

Pros:
Story, Holden, Palmer, Score, Direction

Cons:
Not more films like this. Dang!

This little known 1962 film stars William Holden in a riveting performance as a Swedish industrialist who is blackmailed into working with the Allies against the Germans. Eric Erickson, (Holden) must convince his family, friends, and business associates that he favors the fatherland over the Allies. He is so successful at it that he loses his wife and friends while gaining the confidence of high officials in the Third Reich. These contacts allow him to freely travel back and forth to wartime Berlin, touring oil refineries and viewing top-secret installations (including the Me 262 Jet Aircraft.

Pros:
Amazingly true story from World War II. Memorable and compelling.

Cons:
A little dated and some wooden dialogue in places.

I find that most of William Holden's work stands the test of time well. This film is an excellent, though little known, example of that. Holden plays Eric Erickson, an expatriated American oil executive, blackmailed by Allied Intelligence into spying on Nazi Germany's oil industry. Certainly, this was a crucial commodity in the Second World War, and Erickson is well placed to gather risky secrets. It is worth noting that this is a true story, written by the director, based on Erickson's life. This 1962 movie was filmed on location in many sites in Europe and the cinematography is, for the...

Why have more people not seen this film?

Pros:
Wonderful acting, gripping story, Holden and Palmer give great performances

Cons:
Certain aspects a little dated-- mainly musical cues in romantic scenes.

I watched this video this evening, and can very comfortably recommend it to any thoughtful movie-goer. Beginning in 1942 in neutral Sweden, the film plots the awakening conscience and increasingly high-stakes espionage activity of prominent Swedish oil-importer Erik Erickson (William Holden). Erickson, a self-described opportunist who trades with both the Allies and Nazi Germany, is blackmailed by Allied Intelligence to use his business contacts to gather information regarding German fuel refineries. Erickson participates reluctantly at first, but inspired by his love and admiration for...
