The Care & Keeping of You by Valorie Schaefer (1998)

This American girl book is an excellent resource when your daugther is getting to the age where you need to talk to her about how her body/emotions are changing. The book is written excellently...and covers all of the necessary stuff (emotions, first cycles, hair/skin care, breast development,etc), without going into to much detail about other stuff that girls this age don't need to know. I decided to buy this book as a discussion starter with my daughter...this book is a must for any mom or pre-puberty girl.

I bought this book to help my daughter learn about the changes her body will make as she gets older. It is very informative and covers all areas of the adoloscent years for girls. It helped to open the door for her to ask questions and gave me a guideline to talk with her without feeling awkward. She will keep the book to look back through. It gives great tips on eating healthy, exercise, resting, etc. One of the most challenging parts of having a daughter is trying to help them understand that not everyone looks alike, feels alike or does the same things alike and I think this book made it very clear that every girl is special and normal just the way they are! I will recommend it to all my friends who have daughters.

Heard it was a great book for tween girls, and it definatley meets all my expectations and more. I bought this book to help me explain things to my daughter also it is so much easier to buy from ebay than going to the store considering I am disabled.

This book is perfect for parents trying to communicate with their daughters about the body, how it changes and how to take care of it. My 9 year old daughter and I have had some great talks while looking through this book. We love it!

I got this book for my 12 year old niece. I like the fact the book strictly deals with the topic of body changes and never addresses the topic of sex. It is a perfect book for young girls who are fixing to have their first period.

We felt this was a great book to give my daughter insight on the changes her body would be going through soon. Good tool to use.

loved it. I read it first and then passed it to my 11 and 10 yr old daughters. I gave them time to read and then we talked. it was a great way to break the ice and get it started. it was the best way to have the talk

I loved this book. I was an easy read for my daughter and she loved learning how to take care of herself. I felt it was appropriate reading for her.

Super book for my daughter who is just entering puberty. Even though my daughter and I have had several conversations about changes in her body, this book addresses even things that I may overlooked - like what actually IS a pimple? And how do you select the right bra size? It is a perfect read and talks about a girl's feelings as well as nutrition, good hygene, exercise, and more. I will recommend this book to others with girls my daughter's age!

Loved the book. I talked with my daughter about all of this stuff but I wasn't sure if she understood it all!! She read the book and it opened up a whole area of "girly" stuff that we could talk further about. She didn't have to be shy asking questions and I think it did a better job than me in explaining the more technical information. I think it's a great resource and definitely doesn't get into the whole "sex" area that the pre-teens aren't ready for yet. It does an awesome description of all about a girls body and the feelings and developments that are coming!

It tells girls all of the coming of age stuff, like shaving legs, periods, and other fun stuff that we as moms, just love talking about with our girls, but they don't.

I heard many great things about this book so I decided to get one for my Daughter. This book has a wonderful way of explaining
How to take care of pre-teens bodies. Example: How to brush your Hair and Teeth (also with Braces). Explains what pimples are.
Then it also gets into body development. My daughter had many questions after looking though the book. This is a great icebreaker for parents
Who aren’t comfortable or need some help talking about some privet subjects.

I saw this book in a local store and thought it would be great for my grandaughter. She is at the age of asking questions and I liked the way it explained everything. After giving it to her she will start up a conversation about what she had read. Would recommend it to anyone just wish we had this 25 years ago.

This book is excellent. My daughter, who is ADHD, rarely sits to read anything. I thought we could read this together. To my surprise I found her reading it on her own and talking to me about it's contents. The book talks about everthing from grooming hair, nails and nutrition to buying a bra and having your first period. I have talked to other parents who recommended this book due to the fact it doesn't address human sexuality at all. It only focuses on a young girls body and how to take care of yourself. I would recommend this book to all young girls

This book is a wealth of information for a little girl. My daughter is 8 years old and had lots of questions regarding, friends, her body, pimples, feelings, etc. The book is clearly written with wonderful pictures. The vocabulary is gentle, not scary. I believe all little girls should be given the opportunity to read this book. It's awesome to have parents to answer your questions, but this book gives that special little girl a resource where she can ponder questions and find the answers right at her beautiful fingertips.

This is a neat book that helps to expalin to young girls what to expect as they get older and how best to care for their body. My daughter is 7 and we went thru various topics in the book. It was easier for me to explain things to her with the book as a reference. I wish I had a book like this when I was young.

What a great book! I wish I had one like it when I was a young girl! It makes subjects like periods, bras and other big girl subjects very approachable. I love the cartoons...girls of all shapes and appreances. A must!

I like this book. I have a daughter who is 12 and is mentally challenged. This book was a little bit too complicated for her to understand. However, my six year old who is gifted was just fine with the book. Able to understand it and read it well. I liked it. I just wanted something to help my 12 year old. Maybe we can go through it together and work on it.

Love everything about it. Covers everything a Pre-teen girl needs to know about their bodies and health. It makes those embarrasing subjects not so hard for mothers and daughters to talk about.

Love pictures and upbeat tone of book. Very comforting book for about age 9 to 11. Not useful for 12 or up due to lack of discussion of reproduction.

This is a great resource to begin a discussion with your daughter. It is very straight-forward and factual. This book uses proper anatomical terms for body parts. It covers everything from getting your period to zits to wearing deodorant. This book discusses maturation but not reproduction. I found it to be a good "jumping off" point for a discussion of the "birds and the bees" with my nine-year-old daughter who loves all things American Girl.

I liked this book because it spoke to my daughter ( she is 10) in ways she can understand and ways she could relate to . It also helped me learn to talk to her a little easier .
I bought the book because my daughter came home from a friend of her's house and she was telling me about it and she had questions . So I wanted to understand her questions and also help her understand . Since I bought this book I have told other parents that have daughters and they to have bought it for there daughters to read and help understand things better . I would get this book for other girls I know if they have questions I would / will keep telling family and friends to get this for there pre-teen/teen daughter's .
