The Brothers Grimm (2005, DVD)

It has been many years since I turned a movie off or walked out of a theater. I am just grateful that I rented this on DVD so I could turn it off after about 45 minutes. Being such an optimist, I kept thinking the movie would get better. The previews looked fantastic, but the movie portrayed the fairytales inaccurately and without purpose. The acting was poor and it held no intrigue whatsoever! Save your money and your time!!!

“The Brothers Grimm,” Staring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger star as Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, two brothers in French occupied Germany who make a living battling ghosts and demons, which is easier than it sounds, since the ghosts and demons are just elaborate parlor tricks staged by the brothers and a couple of henchmen. The French ruler knows about them, and rather than merely put them to death, he decides to torture them a little bit first. He has heard rumblings about a village bordering a forest that truly appears to be enchanted, and young girls from the village are disappearing. The brothers Grimm are sent there to “solve” their problem, which the ruler expects will end with them getting burned alive by the townsfolk.
Will thinks that the woods are just the work of someone who’s performing an even more elaborate ruse than the ones that he and Jacob perform. But Jacob knows better; he notices that the trees are indeed moving, and he’s read all the fairy tales that Will dismisses, and recognizes a similarity to a story about a queen (Monica Belluci) who loved to gaze upon her reflection. They enlist the reluctant help of a tracker named Angelika (Lena Headey) to get them out of the woods alive. If you like fantasy, faeries and Enchantments, this dark version of our childhood stories will most likely be something you would enjoy – though it is definitely NOT like the faerie tales we heard as children!
Interesting film, but not for everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie even though the dialogue can, at times, be difficult to follow. I believe this is due to the accents of the many characters coupled with the somewhat loud background music.
The story is a complete fantasy and I bought it because I am a huge Heath Ledger fan. Heath goes against character here and plays the fanciful, child like, younger Grimm brother Jake. I must say the first time I watched this movie it was not what I expected, however, after purchasing it and watching it a second time I was able to really appreciated the character Heath created in his portrayal of Jake. He is, as always, quite charming. I also enjoyed Matt Damon's portrayal of his character Will. The two actors together really complement each other nicely! That being said, this movie must have been extremely difficult to make and my hat goes off to Terry Gilliam for undertaking such a challenging film.

During this story you are able to recognize all the fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm that you grown up with. The story is a little campy but entertaining.

I enjoy fantasy and found this twist on the Brothers Grimm very amusing. I thought it was a fun movie to watch. Good cast of actors.

We rented this movies shortly after Heath Ledger's death and loved it so we decided to buy it. It is a great twist on the Grimm Fairy tales with action and comedy thrown in with a little romance and a touch of scary. It may be a bit too scary for the younger set, less than 5, but my 7 and 11 year olds enjoyed it a whole lot.

My children like the movie and special effects. Really trippy. Mud people whoaaaa!! Spider web horse and If you like Heath Ledger he is in it.

I liked the show when it came out. My kids like a good action show and the humor and family issues with brothers my boys understood. Plus it had enough of the girlie topic to intrest my daughter age 11. The reason I purchased it was I felt so bad when Heath Ledger died I wanted to do something and this was all I could think of.

I saw the movie on tv and the kids like it so they want it to buy it. What they like about it is all the fairytales come into one movie. And how they came to be involved into one story. The kids can see it over and over when they want to.

not one of my fondest movies but was good not really the kind of movies i like i bought it because of the actor it was shipped fast n would buy from this buyer again

It was just okay. It was a fine movie, but just not what I expected. I am collecting Heath Ledger movies.

I wanted to get this movie because I had seen it before and I was reading The Sisters Grimm series.I really like it. This movie is not for everyone though. It is interesting but, hard to get into it at the begining the Books The Sisters Grimm are much more interesting and fun to read.

Heath Ledger played funny witty charming in this movie to me he outshined Matt Damon. If you watch his facial expressions and listen to some of what he says it is truly funny. I loved the special effects in this film and did like the magic. Truly another great movie with Heath Ledger, I think the ending could have been a slight better, but it made you wonder about a number 2.

This was a wonderful fairy tale for children. It had the concept of almost every fairy tale I grew up on. Plus Heath and Matt where great together in this movie. I'd recomend if you don't have this movie than you need to get it. There wasn't anything I didn't like about this movie. It all was great!

This is an excellent movie. It's well written. The acters were very good. It keeps you interested through the whole movie. This is one of the better movies that are out there these days.

I liked this movie the first time I saw it. It has so many different references to fairy tales in it and it is fun to try and catch them all. I like both actors that play the two main leads in this film. There are some pretty gross scenes though, so I would not recommend this for a younger audience. I rent a movie from Netflix and if I crave to see it again, then I buy it. I would recommend renting this movie first, it is rather different. Long live fairy tales!

Hhmmmm, lets see... We picked up The Brothers Grimm today simply because the front and back cover looked interesting, stars included Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, and the beautiful Monica Bellucci. The cover offered a very stunning pose of Monica Bellucci, but the movie didnt hold our interests enough to even see her role in the movie.

This movie is by the Director of Monty Python and The Holy Grail, so if you enjoyed the Monty Python films, you "may" enjoy The Brothers Grimm??

Supposedly Rolling Stone, People, and Good Morning America gave it good reviews.

Its just not exactly our type of film I guess. We'll watch it again just to give it a second chance, but dont have very high hopes of enjoying it anymore than our first viewing.

Rent It or Buy It? RENT IT first.

it is a good movie i think anyone will like it.it is funny so you little kid can watch it so buy it to wacth it and you will like it

Love it, what can I say the guys were great. They carried this movie. It has alot of hummer in it and the scary parts were great also. You have to check it out if you are a fan of Heath Ledger and Matt Damon.

I bought the item because i though that it was a great price for the item. I had a good experience with this seller and would buy another item from him with no hesitation.

This exciting, action-packed movie will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time! I loved the movie when I saw it! It is a bit scary in a couple parts, though.

Short and to the point, this movie was poorly put together. It had a great thing going with the cast, the fantasy side of it, but the director failed the movie quite shamefully. While it had all the pieces to make it a very entertaining movie it lacked a good director since too many parts didnt quite come together. I imagine the director had time constraints since parts just didnt smoothly fit, i wasnt pleased. I might watch it again but wouldnt buy it for my collection because i only buy really GOOD 4 out of 5 or 5 out of 5 movies. It might meet certain people's expectations, i only suggest renting it before you think about buying it.

We have watched this movie 3 times. It never got any better. If you watch it once that's enough. Not one for your DVD collection.
It's supposed to be about two brothers (cons) involved in a fairy tale.
Someone saying this is a good movie would be a fairy tale.

I was expecting more from the movie. I think they showed most of the best scenes in the previews. Still, it was well made, and pretty entertaining.
