Rogel (Historical Dictionary of Slovenia, Scarecrow, 1996) gives a historical account complementing a set of documents, brief biographies of the major actors, and an annotated bibliography of relevant books in English. The collection of documents and biographies conveys a jarring contrast between the crafted resolutions of the United Nations and the violent lives of such "ethnic cleansers" as Vojislav Seselj and Zeljko Raznjatovic (Arkan). Rogel's history is balanced and lucid, comparing the idealism of the Western powers at Yugoslavia's creation with their "economic and political realism" at its demise.
