A great idea that fails to execute.

The Big's is the first official MLB (major league baseball) title for the Nintendo Wii. It was released in the summer of 2007.

I am a huge fan of Wii Sports! I spend at least 15 minutes a day doing batting practice on this game. When I saw that MLB was putting out a Wii baseball game I was excited! I was gambling that MLB would not put their title on a sub-par game.

I was a bit surprised at the game when it came out. You get the option of pitching, fielding (you cannot do this in Wii Sports) and of course hitting. You also have the ability to actually field the ball, run the bases (pump the remote and steer with the nunchuk), and try to pick people off on the bases. All these options, surely the game cannot be bad!

I was wrong. :(

The "tutorial" mode was really hard. First up was pitching. You have many different types of pitches to choose from. However, you have to have your remote and nunchuk together at all times. Then you press the "z" button on the 'chuk, twist the remote certain way's, and oh ya do a throwing motion. Nothing like trying to master 3-5 different things to kill the idea of a game. :P

Batting was a bit easier to do. However, having the stupid 'chuk tied to the bat made it feel crappy and hard. I have spent hours doing a full batter's swing on Wii sports and now I'm forced to to little wrist flick's to do a motion. :P :( Very bad form.

Running was fun, fielding was difficult to get the hang of, and overall the game felt clunky to play.

I decided to have some friends over and we all tried the homerun hitting contest. You get to pick your team (Any National or American League team!) and then your player for the contest. Again it was tough to do because of the nunchuk. We eventually stopped playing and put back in Wii Sports to prove who was king of the homerun derby.

I was happy with a couple of things, frustrated by others, and surprised about one thing:

Happy:

Very current team lineups!
Ability to pick your player on the team.
Fielding ability.

Frustrated:

PITCHING! :(
Fielding
Hitting
(Wii Sports trained me well I guess)

Surprised:

Current Rock and Roll music during the homerun hitting derby! Here is a list of the songs/bands in the game! :)

"Plush" - Stone Temple Pilots
"Nearly Lost You" - Screaming Trees
"Oceans Size" - Jane's Addiction
"Millennium" - Killing Joke
"Tearing" - Rollins Band
"More Human than Human" - White Zombie
"Dreamworld" - Midnight Oil
"Hung Out to Dry" - Fu Manchu
"Ace of Spades" - Motörhead
"Down on the Street" - The Stooges
"Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" - Primus
"Somebody" - Blue October
"Insanity Rains" - Satellite Party
"Satisfied" - Highbench

A great idea that just didn't execute. Back to Blockbuster with this Title I go!

2/5.

  Not so easy to play

The bigs for the wii is not very easy to play, to pitch you have to turn the remote a certain way for a pitch and it will give a different pitch. To bat the nunchuck is allways in the way and you can't swing very good.

The Bigs is big time bad!

Very bad game. Unbelieveably unrealistic. Waste of money! Guys jumping 25 to 30 feet in the air to rob you of a homer, come on what a joke. Guys diving all over to take away a nice hit. Don't even start with me on the in the zone thing. All you have to do is make some sort of contact and the ball flies 600 feet when you supposably in the zone. Home Run derby is some what playable. Not sure why thiey would even waste the time and money to make such a horrible game. Please save your money and time and don't purchase this game.

Great game after the learning curve

I just purchased this game and at first really did not like it. Batting was different from Wii sports, fielding seemed difficult, and it seemed like the computer just crushed me when I pitched to them. However, after going through the tutorial and playing a ton with a couple friends we decided this is quite possibly one of the best baseball games we have ever played.

Hitting:
Once you figure out the "touch" with the nunchuck, hitting is excellent. With a good contact hitter (eg: Ichiro, GO M'S!!!) and a standard swing, once you get your timing down you can hit it to any part of the field. Just aim a direction with the nunchuck and swing at the right time and it should work. Pointing upwards with it results in a fly ball while pointing down with the nunchuck will cause grouders. Hold A and point upwards to swing for the fences.

Pitching:
With pitching, there are 9 total pitches, and each pitcher has a selection of 2-4 of them, depending on their real-life arsenal of pitches, and their relative skill with them. To pitch you hold down the button for the pitch you want and swing/twist the remote the direction required for the pitch. Releasing the pitch it the "white zone" of the pitch meter (it is pretty much like the swing meter for most golf games) will result in a perfect pitch that has more speed or break, depending on the pitch. Releasing too soon or too late will result in the pitch location showing on the batter's hitting box, making it easy for them to see if its a ball or strike and where it is going to be in the strike zone. It seems unweildy a bit at first, but once again, when you get your timing down it is fluid and fun. Plus, every time you hit a particular pitch off of someone, say their curveball, that pitch will lose stamina. If you get the pitch's stamina down to zero, then that pitcher no longer can throw that pitch. Another thing that is awesome is pitches don't lose stamina unless they are being hit, so if your pitcher has been lights out for 7 innings, odds are most of his pitches still have plenty of stamina in them and you have a good chance to go for a complete game.

Fielding:
Fielding is the hardest part of the game to get used to. Drumming the remote while directing your fielder makes him run faster in any direction. Pushing the d-pad on the remote or holding A and flicking a direction can throw the ball to a base. I prefer the d-pad method, but I like that it has an option. When you don't have the ball, holding A and flicking in a direction can cause a dive (left, right, or down for forwards) or if you flick upwards your guy will jump up for a ball. It takes a lot of practice to get used to, but once you rob someone of a game winning home run, it is completely worth it.

Other:
Another addition to the game is the Big Play meter. Build up 10000 points from hitting, pitching, and defense, and your team gets a "big play" while hitting or pitching. When hitting, it results in Power Mode where any contact is a homerun if you have the timing down. In pitching, it results in Big Heat, where all the pitches get full stamina and power, and any strikes you throw that at bat will still your opponents points from their big play meter.

All in all a great game, full rosters, create-a-character, and fun, realistic gameplay where the over-the-top elements just add to the game. Wait until your first showdown with a catcher at the plate and see if you're not having fun.

This game is a great game for the wii. Much better than the baseball which came with the Wii sports disc. This game is fun and easy, you can pick it up and play it, not confusing like many thought it would be. Overall i would give it a 10/10 and it is a must have for the Wii System.

  Generation Difference

This is my 6 year old's favorite game. So it is simple enough for him, then the rest of us who complain about the controls are too old.

My only problem is the pitching which involves twisting the remote. No matter how I twist, I never can throw the curve or other special pitches. I drives me nuts. Otherwise it is an entertaining game for kids and parents to play together. Other than my issues with the pitching motion, it is easy and becomes intuitive very quickly.

In comparision to Madden '08, BIGS is easy to learn and play the game.

  The Bigs, for Wii

I decided to buy it because I like the game. I am a huge baseball fan (and a bigger Cubbies fan :-) ).

The game-play on the Wii is not too bad, it has a very arcade like feeling to it.

If your looking for a very accurate game like MLB 2k5/6/7, this is not the game for you.
But if your a die hard baseball and don't mind being able to get robbed of an HR in Wrigley Field (20ft high walls), then try this game out.

As with every game your not sure about, rent it first and if you like it enough to buy it, go for it.

Fun game for older kids and adults. Kinda complicated for younger kids. Graphics are pretty cool.Teams are up to date, for the most part. Being able to set up your own rookie and watch him progress is a neat feature.

  Great Game

The Bigs is one of the best sports games I have played on any console. I normally don't like sport games, but this one is great. The controls are difficult to get the hang of, but once you do it's a lot of fun. At times the game play changes from realistic to arcade, but that's part of the fun.

The game play can get a little repetitive after a while, but over all it's a great game. I have spent many hours playing it.

  Perfect game for the Wii
Review created: 10/10/08

This game is perfect for the Wii. Batting is controlled by swinging the remote like a bat. If you swing too fast or slow you will miss. It doesent take too long to get the hang of it. Use the Nunchuck to pull or push your swing for different hit placement. Hit it with your power swing and do some damage to the lights or a electronic score board. It's just a lot of fun.
Pitching is not as sensitive as batting. just a movement is enough to send the ball to the plate. Swing the remote with a quick flick and you can be pitching in the 90's. Pitches are determined by twisting the remote one way or the other while throwing and button selection. Tons of pitches to choose from.
The hardest part for me is the fielding. once you figure out who the game has chosen to get the ball, you can move the remote up and down fast to run faster. Get the ball and flick the remote tword the base you want to throw to. Great catches off the wall are possible with spiderman like moves.
I like the Rookie area of the game. Play your rookie in games and earn points to upgrade him. You have to choose what kind of player you want. Power hitter, Controlled swing, Great glove, Super fast, or Perfect arm. The chlenges are fun and games are not too long. usualy 3-5 innings.
Graphics are awsome and very easy to follow. The game just feels like you are playing Ball.
Definately pick this one up if you are looking for a game that takes advantage of the Wii system and have any likeing for Baseball.

  The Bigs (Wii)

This is definately a good game with the right intentions but some poor execution. Once you get the hang of the pitching controls it is quite fun... same for batting. Where the game falls short is in its feilding controls. I read about this prior to buying the game and must confirm that those reports are true. When feilding, 9/10 times the player who feilded the ball will not throw to the base you intend. In games like Mario Super Sluggers, all one has to do is simply point the Wii remote to the direction of the intended base. In this game, the same rules apply except you must press A to throw. This would be fine if The Bigs feilding wasn't so slow and clunky. You point to 1st and it throws to 3rd or home most of the time... very frustrating. If it wasn't for the batting and pitching I would not recommend this game. Another downside to the game is that there is no season mode. Instead, there is a career mode where you create and customize your own rookie and are taken through a series or games and other challenges. It's not bad... the customization options could be a little more robust. All in all, I'd say this game ranks from average to good.

Love the graphics. Very easy to navigate thru menus. What I dislike, maybe it's me, but fielding and throwing the ball to a certain base is not easy, you have to tilt the remote right for 1st, up for 2nd, left for 3rd, and down for home, but when you do that, the ball never leaves the fielder hand to go too that base. I feel using the directional arrows on the remote would have made more sense. Also to pitch, you have to tilt the remote up, then down. This is a wii, and sense it is based on interaction, just like the baseball on wii sports, a throwing motion while holding down a button for that certain pitch, would have worked better. Overall, the game is average, and could use some improvement.

  The game rocks!
Review created: 12/13/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read a lot of reviews that knock this title, well it is not intended to be that type of game. You might as well have knocked it for not involving a crossbow or treasure map! The Bigs is supposed to be a fun, arcade style, game where you can "make it in the Bigs" as a rookie.

I will admit that the pitching wasn't easy at first. But after a actually trying, it is very, very aesy to throw different pitches. Same with robbing a HR, once you figure out how to do it, it makes the game that much rewarding. I think because of these features, the game becomes more "replayable".

I love the fact you can create your own player, and upgrade him as the game goes by, and all of the mini games included in the games to the post season. I always played these games on other games, but now the game tells me my mission. Much better than trying to score 100 runs in the first inning on RBI baseball for NES. You can also go head to head, and trade players to update rosters during the next year. Cool game, but even better if you guys would learn to use the wiimote.

Great Game, but struck out on a few things
Review created: 10/01/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Bigs is a great game. Great graphics, great fun, and great gameplay. From the get go I was impressed to see how well the pitching and the batting was incorporated with the movement of the wii-stick, but once it comes to throwing the ball to different bases it was difficult at first. After like a week of non stop playing I did get the hang of flicking the joy stick to throw to the 1st base, 2nd base, etc. but there was still moments when I wanted to throw to 2nd base but it goes to the 3rd basemen. This pretty much pissed me off along with the wacky effect that a outfielder can do a Jackie Chan wall push off 15-25 ft in the air to get a home run bound ball. But the game is fun, I played non stop and I do kind of like the rookie challenge. Problem with that is the rookie edit doesn't have a lot of choices to pick from so if my rookie goes against your rookie very good chance that they'll look the same.

The Bigs is worth checking out

Graphics: 7/10
The graphics are above average and they are smooth. There is nothing that makes this game stand out as next gen though.

Sound: Great – 7/10
The music soundtrack is great, but the in game sounds and commentary is repetitive.

Gameplay: Great – 7/10
Smooth animations, great single player mode, and fast arcade style, this is a fun game to pick up an play.

Replay Value – Above Average 7/10
This is a good arcade style baseball game. It is fast paced, but gets old quick. Playing with others is the only benefit to this game.

Overall – 7/10
This is a good, fast, arcade style baseball game, but it doesn't break any molds here. The power-up meter, and single player campaign make this game fun, and slightly addictive. Check it out.

This is a very fun game if you like baseball. Hitting is fairly easy pitching is a little difficult and defense takes some practice. I wouldn't recommend this game for kids below 8 because you really have to understand all of the buttons. Overall this is a fun game with some practice and also has all of the starting mlb lineups and you can even add rookies and name them. It uses the movement of the wii remotes fairly well. My daughter loves this game.
