The Big Chill (1999, DVD)

Movie Description
Seven members of a close-knit college group of friends are reunited fifteen years later after the eighth commits suicide. The funeral and reception lead to an extended weekend for all as they decide to spend time together pondering the recent events. Amidst a barrage of Motown classics, the members each offer little tidbits about their current lives while reminiscing about the past. In college, the absent and recently deceased Alex was the biggest and brightest star of the bunch but never seemed to get anywhere after being set loose in the real world. The slow acknowledgement that their champion never materialized leads the group in ever widening circles of thought. Discussions of their past lives and current bring about the realization that each has changed so much while remaining remarkably similar. Despite the tragic circumstances, the group disperses with renewed friendships and a newfound appreciation for life.

Being a baby boomer myself I can totally relate to the characters and the sound track of "The Big Chill". I bought it because it's a movie that I can watch over and over. The characters are realistic and the setting supurb. It's one of my all time favorites.

I have loved this movie for many years, and watch it everytime it was on . Now i will enjoy it anytime i want. It has such a good story behind it of freinds from college and how thier lives went after school, and who stayed incontact with which ones. The loss of one of thier peers sends them into to alot of remembering and some not so good times too. Just a really good movie over all. I recommend it to all adults.

This is story of college friends meeting after the death of a friend. How their
lives have changed since the last time they were together. It has tears, smiles
    and songs and some dancing.

It's Time To Thaw Out The Big Chill

Ok, I'm over 50. This was my generation. I went to college the same time that these people did in the 1960s and 1970s. But what do I have in common with them? Not much.

However, I did like the music and still do. And I sort of like the movie.

We have a star-studded movie all about meeting again in the 1980s at the funeral of a college friend who has committed suicide. (Kevin Costner, in an unseen role. He was clipped out in the editing room.)

The friends are: Kevin Kline and Glen Close who are happily married
and the hosts of the get-together, Tom Berenger who is a TV star, William Hurt who is an injured Vietnam vet and now is impotent and feels a failure, Mary K. Place who is a successful lawyer but a failure at attracting a husband, Jo Beth Williams who brings her husband but is still trying to catch Tom Berenger, and Jeff Goldblum who is the nerd but was accepted into the cool group. Only Meg Tilly is thoroughly out of place as the deceased's girlfriend, but she tries.

Bonding again is the theme of the movie. They thoroughly have a good time while we get to hear many of the 1960s soul and rock hits. They cook meals, play football, dance the way we did in the 1960s, watch old movie reels of themselves, go for walks, and then go home to the various lives that they have created. They laugh and cry about the way they were.

The climax of the movie is Glen Close convincing Kevin Kline to have sex with Mary K. Place to get her pregnant or at least help her out of the frustrating dilemma that she feels that she is in.

The movie was nominated for several Academy Awards inclucing Glen Close as Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing, and Best Picture. It won none.

Many of us baby boomers can identify with at least one of these people. It's also good to reminisce. Happy viewing!
