The Beatles Anthology: 1 - Beatles (The) (CD 1995)

I bought this CD to finish out the Anthology. I have #2 and #3 already.
Disc 1, well Free as a Bird is the best thing about this disc. Even though the live cuts at the end of disc 1 bring back memories of a cold February night.
Everything else in between is just fluff.
Disc 2 is much better.

A must have for mop tops. A great behind the scenes experience at the early years. A real treat to listen to great music coming together. If you remember the 60's or even if it's cloudy, you must have this series of albums in your collection.

Positives: For anyone who loves, likes, or is even moderately interested in the Beatles, Anthology 1 is an excellent addition to your music library. From home recordings made in the late 1950's to alternate takes and classic performances, such as the Royal Variety Show in London and the Ed Sullivan Show on their first U.S. visit, these discs contain a fairly comprehensive view of early Beatles history.

Minor Negative: In some cases, the sound quality sounds suspiciously like you are listening to something recorded live on primitive equipment in the late 50's/early 60's. Oh, wait. You are. Just don't expect too much sound quality and you won't be disappointed.

Major Negative: The alternate takes on the Anthology series are very interesting to hear. However, in many cases, they are actually the combination of several different takes. In these cases, you're hearing an alternate final mix of several takes made 30+ years after the fact. Basically, you're hearing a version of the song that didn't exist when the Beatles were still around. It seems that it would be more authentic to just let us hear these early takes in their original form. However, as they are presented, they would probably be more enjoyable to the casual listener since mixing and matching takes would result in a more complete feel.

The Beatles Anthology 1 makes for a great history lesson for those interested in the genesis and early career of the world's best loved rock and roll band. Sound quality is lacking in some places but is better than expected when considering that some of the earlier recordings were made by propping up a single mic to capture all of the instuments and vocals. The few live concert recordings are great. Those thinking of purchasing this album should note that this one is for die-hard Beatles fans and students of late 50s / early 60s rock only. Casual fans will probably not find much of interest here. New fans should probably start with "A Hard Days Night" , "Rubber Soul" , or one of the other excellent Beatles studio albums.

This CD was a huge disappointment. The sound quality was awful. It sounded like the songs were recorded at a state fair.

me so much like these beatles,i like them. the songs they sing make me go go much happy.all the time im thinking bout them beatle boys.oh yeah oh yeah this is how mmusic it sounds it taste.the song i like,you know how it goes,and thats that.if you want to know about the beatles,read a book.this is good advice.if the book is good you can read one more if yoou want or watch a video.this is my real truth

As a long time fan,I found this really interesting.Never mind the quality of some songs,this was quite a while ago and it's amazing in itself that some of this existed.The live performances are great.The one part of this I found really amazing are the 2 takes of "I'll Be Back" Take 2 is done in a time signature that John could not sing .Take 3 is in the time signature that we have on the official album.Bang,bang. Amazing musicianship from a foresome who were unstudied and couldn't read music.

i really love the music that's why i bought, the case was cracked, the booklet was missing the cover, but the cds were playable and with no scratches, so no complaints here, I was satisfied with this product, I love the Beatles!

This CD includes sessions that aren't recorded in the studio, rather, they are performed live though not in a huge concert arena. They talk about the songs before performing them.

I bought this for the one song "Until There Was You" which my son is singing at a family wedding. Of course, there are many songs that I like on the set.

It's always interesting to revisit a song that you loved in the past. In this instance, Anthology 1 presents a rare view into the EMI studios in the 1960's. The disc presents several alternative versions of songs we have all heard on the radio and I found it amazing to listen to the origional demo on acoustic guitar, prior to Lennon and McCartney arrangements that became comercial hits. Anthology presents several versions leading to the final polished release that provides a segment of time, held in place, on this disc. I highly recomend it to any Beatles fan. MF Foster

I was raised on Beatles' music along with music from other British rock groups of the 60's. I really like this type of music. The Anthology series are decent CD's. However, being that I was raised on their music, I'm use to their music on records. Records to me just sound so much better than CD's. For me listening to CD music of older bands isn't as good as listening to their records. Plus, being a fan and listening to these albums year after year for as long as I have, I have the sequence of songs mapped in my head. I know when I hear one song, what the next one will be, and what all the following songs in order will be. The Beatles CD's, frequently don't follow the exact order of songs listed on the records, so when I listen to CD music usually in my car as I'm driving, I'm reminded of the lack of originality in the CD music mix.
The music on these CD's are worthy and certainly should be enjoyed by anyone who likes this style of music.

This collection to listen to just makes you feel good and brings you back to those days when the songs were 1st released and then some more. The old recordings made before the Beatles made it really big only available on these CD's are just incredible! If thats not enough, you get to read about it all with the brochure included. I am so glad I have made this purchase!
