After already having seen the movie, I decided to invest in reading the books. Bk #1, THE BAD BEGINNING, only took me an hour to finish, and it was an enjoyable--if dark--read.

The Baudelaire children--Violet, Klaus, and Sunny--are left orphaned after a mysterious fire destroys their home and kills their parents. Taken into custody by Mr. Poe, the executor of their parent's estate, they learn that their parent's will states that they must be cared for by a relative. The closest relative, unbeknownest to the children, is Count Olaf, an actor and leader of a theatre troupe who lives in a dilapitated house on the other side of town.

Things, of course, only go from bad to worse after the children move into Count Olaf's home, which is strangely covered inside and out with drawings and representations of a strange-looking eye. Count Olaf even has a tattoo of the same image on his ankle. As the Count hatches a scheme to gain control of the Baudelaire fortune, which the children are not privy to until Violet comes of age, the children are alternately scared of their new "parent" and determined to find a way out of their dreadful situation.

I enjoyed this walk on the dark side, and plan on reading Book #2 in the series later today. That said, however, I think it depends on your child and his or her maturity as to whether this would be a good read for them or not. Although the reading material is suitable for around 8 years old and up, the book IS dark-natured, and might scare some children. If they've already seen the movie, they might be prepared for its darkness--if the movie depiction scared them, then hold off on the book for awhile.

Fantastic Beginning to a Great Series
Review created: 04/08/08

I have never read this series before, so, logically, I began with the first book, "The Bad Beginning." What a great book! It is a quick, easy read, and is seasoned with miserable circumstance that helps you to fall in love with the characters even more.

The author also incorporates a very important tool: when he uses a word that a young reader might not understand, he explains it for the reader. For example, on page 68, one such passage reads: It is very useful when one is young to learn the difference between "literally" and "figuratively." If something happens literally, it actually happens; if something happens figuratively, it feels like it's happening. If you are literally jumping for joy, for instance, it means you are leaping in the air because you are very happy. If you are figuratively jumping for joy, it means you are so happy that you could jump for joy, but you are saving your energy for other matters.

These occasional explanations are easily understood and do not detract from the flow of the story as one might think. Just based on this book, I highly recommend this series to all families. If children are not ready to handle Harry Potter on their own, then "A Series of Unfortunate Events" will likely be their stepping stone into more complex novels. Enjoy!

Review created: 04/06/07

After seeing the film based on the first 3 of the Series of Unfortunate Events, i thought it might be interesting to compare the movie and the books. Personally, i love children's books, and the Series, from what i can tell from the first 2, is definitely worthwhile reading.

My 9 yr old grandson is a voracious reader and he was absolutely delighted to find the first 4 books of the series as a Christmas gift from 'granny.' (When I was at a local bookstore looking for a series to buy for him, I requested a suggestion from a young man who was browsing the books. He told me he was 9 yrs old and just loved this series. What better recommendation could I have found?!?!?!? )

the Bad Beginning a good start for readers 10 and up

Most books are sugar coated, and non real. This book goes the other way, and perhaps makes our kids think about how lucky they are and how their lives are actually pretty good. Lots of kids think that their lives are not so good, and they are onloy comparing to friends that seem to have more things. this book opens some eyes and hopefully makes kids realize that things can be worse.

What Have I Done To Deserve Such Wickedness?
Review created: 11/16/04
by: garethusa -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Absorbing, clever writing for vocabulary building, sense of reading a classic novel, beautiful book production

Cons:
Subtle adult themes not intended for younger readers, predictable for teen reading, missing something magical

To celebrate my two years of writing reviews on epinions.com, I wanted to do something different - write my first book review. Enjoy. ************* Why I bought a book in the first place: Reading is such a difficult task for me, unless if it is something that I am truly interested in. I hated reading back in elementary, jr. high, high school, and in college - especially British Literature. Why on earth would I even dare buy a book called "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket you ask? I have a goal of writing a book myself and I really don't know where to begin. Oddly enough, I love creative...

***Reader Beware . You will be Hooked***
Review created: 02/18/04
by: ldusold -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Mysterious, and Intriguing... You WILL be hooked!

Cons:
Nothing... The book is addicting!!!

If you want a different sort of book, with some startling plot twists that will keep you intrigued, then . Lemony Snicket has the books for YOU. My son has an awkward sense of taste, so when searching for a good book for him to read, and actually be interested in, my fingers stumbled upon the Lemony Snicket books. My son hates reading, but usually only when it s something that doesn t interest him. If you are not really into stories of Unfortunate Events then this is not a book for you. My son, however, is the type to be interested in the oddest of odd things!!! Lemony Snicket is the Author...

Series of Unfortunate Events #1 The Bad Beginning
Review created: 01/09/08
by: dagny21 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good story, fast read, fun illustrations by Brett Helquist, memorable characters.

Cons:
Too dark for some children.

It finally happened. My 1st grade son is now suggesting books for me to read, rather than the other way around. For the last several weeks, my son has been working his way through the Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snicket. He's now midway through #9, and his harassment finally got me to pick up the first one and give it a try. The Series The Series of Unfortunate Events is a series comprised of 13 books, each containing exactly 13 chapters. It is the story of the three Baudelaire orphans: Klaus, Violet, and Sunny, and all of the terrible things that befall them. The Bad...

Life Can Be A Series Of Unfortunate Events, But Is That A Bad Thing? Really?
Review created: 07/01/04
by: hind623 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Very unique, paradoxically fun, weird humor, strong message and the unfortunate events themselves!

Cons:
Some may think they are too sophisticated to read children's books.

Contrary to many other readers, the first thing I read on the cover of any book is the author's name. I guess it is the only way of getting a sense of the identity of the person who wrote the book. What it is in a name you may ask? you would be surprised. At any rate, my younger brother came to me crying one day about this book review he had due for his English class. The fact that he hadn't read the book was not at all helpful. I, eventually, decided to write the report for him myself and thus read the book for him also. When I first read the author's name "Lemony Snicket", I remember...

Do Not Read This Review If You Like Evil Guardians.
Review created: 10/29/04
by: gm-lvr -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
It is CAPTIVATING! You'll never want to put it down!

Cons:
Many unnecessary explanations... Of course, that just makes it more interesting.

I am very disappointed to tell you that there are many bad beginnings. There are many bad beginnings in the sense that you might make a terrible first impression upon your mother s boss who is using you as a good reason for the boss to rehire her. Or perhaps you may be taking part in the bad beginning of a thunderstorm in which you are forced into colliding with another automobileist that is having the exact same troubles as you, not being ready for the bad beginning of this storm. Or, perhaps, you are in the bad beginning of a bad book with nothing but bad, distasteful, utterly unbelievable,.
