  Good Movie !
Review created: 06/13/07

Enjoyable because of the story line and the good casting.

The casting covered Jean Harlow (with singer Gwen Stefani), Ava Gardner (with Kate Beckinsale), and Katherine Hepburn (with Cate Blanchett).

The movie is a little long, but not hard to follow.

Definitely a good popcorn movie, and appears to be a realistic story on the man Howard Hughes. Leonardo DiCaprio played the man so well that any plotline failures are overshadowed by the acting.

  Howard Hughes' story
Review created: 07/07/06

A decent movie about one of America's facinating personalities. Very convincing nostalgic look at the early twentieth century America. Dicaprio delivers a solid portrayal of Hughes. Cate Blanchett is wonderful, the Hughes/Hepburn dialog and interplay is very well done and entertaining as are many other scenes with Alan Alda and Alec Baldwin. The special features are also excellent, including the History Channel's "Howard Hughes Tech" feature. An entertaining and worthwhile DVD.

LEONARDO DECAPRIO DID A GREAT JOB

THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE, HOWEVER IT WAS KIND OF LONG. BUT THE LONGER YOU WATCH, THE BETTER IT GETS. LEO DID A GREAT JOB PLAYING HOWARD HUGHES, ESPECIALLY WITH THE PROBLEM HOWARD HUGHES HAD WITH REPEATING WORDS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Martin Scorsese's (((THE AVIATOR ))) a story of Howard Hughes, a ninfluential billionaire (Leonardo DiCaprio) takes place during the 20s and '40s, aviation at age 25. 1930's would bring speed and distance records accounted Hugh's dedication in aviation industry/history. DiCaprio and Blanchett deliver performance Academy Awards.

Widescreen OR Full-screen versions.

DVD CAST----- Cate Blanchett----- Leonardo DiCaprio----- Ian Holm----- Willem Dafoe----- Alec Baldwin----- John C. Reilly----- Danny Huston----- Kate Beckinsale----- Jude Law----- Alan Alda----- Adam Scott----- Loudon Wainwright----- Rufus Wainwright----- Martha Wainwright----- Gwen Stefani.

The mother bathing a boy, Hollywood during 1927, Swing life style, MGM, Hughes examines aviation reconstruction. Hughes 352 MPH silver bullet, Hepburn Estate and much more to understand. The conflict and the hard work are like drugs and alcohol for Hughes.

I really never got into aviation films so my last rate was 4****.

Interesting Story of an Aggressive Innovator!! 6/10
Review created: 03/30/07
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A very aggressive, true story of the rise and fall of a famous billionaire aviator, movie producer, playboy, and businessman. Howard Hughes had a dream, and fought throughout his lifetime to fulfill his dream, after continuously being discouraged by society.
His childhood dream was to fly the fastest planes ever built, make the biggest movies ever, and to be the richest man in the world.
He suffered a life-time of obsessive compulsive disorder related to a germ-phobia, for which we found interesting.
The movie is not filled with very much action and excitement, as it is more on the conservative side, therefore may not be of interests to all viewers, but is however very interesting from beginning to end.
Interesting film in aspect of the early development of North American single-wing airplanes and jumbo jets, and an aggressive individuals desire to achieve his dream.
We cannot say we are a Leonardo DiCaprio fan, but he did play a very descriptive role followed by an outstanding performance.
The movie does run 170 minutes, and keeps your interest throughout.
Era: Mid-1920's through 1940's.
We enjoyed the movie, and rate it a 6/10. Aviator is not a movie you may watch over and over again, but will be considered a nice addition to your home movie collection. We hope you enjoy it!!!

The costuming and set were excellent. The story was interesting. DiCaprio did a nice job. It also neat to see the extent of what he will do given this complex character. This movie will make you think.

Con: It was a long movie though.

Another fine film from Mr. Scorscese. Leonardo DiCaprio is terrific playing the part of eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes. Beautiful sets puts us back in the thirties. Great to look at. Everything is "blue" in the first half of the film; that is, Scorcese has somehow put a blue hue into every scene. Even the golf course looks blue. I think he was trying to give the film an aura of patriotism. And I'd like to mention Alan Alda and Alec Baldwin, who show up in strong supporting roles. I was entertained, and that's what counts.

A movie about Hughes' life and not just his disorder
Review created: 02/12/06

As someone with OCD, I have always been intrigued by Howard Hughes and his life. I’m just glad to see a movie about all of the good things that Hughes accomplished rather than a movie just about Hughes as a crazy person with long fingernails.

I thought the cast did a great job bringing the story to life. The story is one we don’t hear about every day. Though it was long, I figure that it evens out with all the hour and a half movies out today. At least with this movie, you got your money’s worth.

This story could have been cut down by an hour and still have gotten the point of his live across. Too much detail, was not worth the time spent watching.

Pretty good movie about billionaire and aviator Howard Hughes, but I was expecting more. Of course, based on the title alone, I knew this movie would focus solely on Mr. Hughes's love of aviation, but I was hoping for more of the "fear of germs" and obsessive/complusive disorder that he was reportedly plagued with. I felt the movie focused on his dating of Hollywood starlets and adoration of airplanes too much. Great performance by Leo, though.

Shows how a great man loses grip with himself and others. I love the way in which it goes into his mind and see the way he thinks. You can see the steps in which he loose's his mind. I liked the movie alot.

An excellent portrait of Howard Hughes and many of the historical moments of WWI and later aviation. Bi-planes with transition to single wing planes. Start of TWA and insuing competition with Pan-Am. Leonardo Dicaprio is absolutely phenomenal, as always. He performs well and definitely teams up well with Scorsese. Cate Blanchett portrays a great Catherine Hepburn. Awesome movie, most definitely recommended.

Ambitious, intoxicating, flamboyant, exciting... and that's just Cate Blanchett's performance! Martin Scorsesse's direction and vision is a marvel and when you realize that Howard Hughes' did all of these things in this short glimpse of his life, it'll astound you that one man could be so inspiring and yet, so tragic a figure. Leonardo Dicaprio brings to life an egnimatic figure whose private struggle with obsessive-compulsive behaviour is saddening, yet his attempt to recreate the man who could life so big is quite an achievement. I saw this movie after watching so many of the other Oscar nominees and winners and wonder how this movie could have been overshadowed by any competition. Don't get me wrong, Million Dollar Baby is a good film, but the Aviator reaches to heights that only it can live at. Rent it or buy it, but be prepared to watch a recreation of a time and a place when one man could truly shake the world!

DiCaprio masterfully portrays Hughes as a genius, eccentric visionary and psychotic. His "battle" with Alda was superb. His successful test flights are captivating. Blanchett gives a strong performance. Well worth seeing. Buy it.

Rented the DVD and was surprised with Di Caprio's performance...wanted to watch again, the lunch scene at the Hepburn estate...the rude, insufferable elitism of those who had enriched themselves under a free-market system and proclaim themselves 'socialists'. The senate hearings were priceless too...wish the banks and auto execs. of today had the same cajones as Huges!

Cate Blanchett is worth the price of admission, all by herself. No wonder she won the Academy Award. A great movie about one of the most colorful, achieving men of the century. Get the 2-disc set, it's well worth it!!
