Album Notes Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Billy Price (vocals); Dick Heintze (piano, Clavinet, organ); John Harrison (bass, background vocals); Robbie Magruder (drums). An outstanding 1974 release by the great blues-rock guitarist Roy Buchanan, THAT'S WHAT I AM HERE FOR is considerably more focused and intense than much mid-'70s blues-rock. Buchanan's signature style, free of the reliance on feedback and distortion of many blues-oriented guitarists, and sounding like a considerably less laid-back J.J. Cale, is instantly recognizable, and his performances on this, his third album, are among his best. The startling Hendrix tribute "Hey Joe" evokes the late guitarist's style while remaining identifiably Buchanan. Elsewhere, the shuffling "My Baby Says She's Gonna Leave Me" is among Buchanan's catchiest songs, and the extended solo that closes the album is simply a monster. The tongue-in-cheek "Roy's Bluz" shows Buchanan's sense of humor, as he subtly apes any number of blues styles and players.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars out of 5 -- THAT'S WHAT I'M HERE FOR features some classy blues work....Rattling piano comes to the fore on 'Roy's Bluz,' and organ shapes 'Please Don't Turn Me Away.' Record Collector
[The album] smolders with blues passion, and features an uncharacteristic freak-out guitar solo on 'Hey Joe.' Dirty Linen
