Album Notes Personnel: Michael Tripplet (guitar); Michael Glass (drums). Recording information: 07/2001. Photographer: Harlan Campbell. Fin Fang Foom unleashes Textures, Structure, and the Condition of the Moods with "The Fool and the Feign," a post-punk head rush with a solid groove that mixes the experimentalism of Fugazi or even Wire with the crunchy moodiness of Jawbox. Heads above their pop-punk contemporaries, Fin Fang Foom manages angular riffs and attacking rhythms without venturing into math rock territory. On "Of Weddings and Funerals" the band proves they can play atmospheric, piano-driven numbers full of Radiohead style. But it's "Deception" that stands out, a track where Fin Fang Foom manages to revive Black Flag, matching both harsh riffs and twisted lyrics. If Fin Fang Foom has any flaw, it's that they are relentlessly serious, but it took Fugazi awhile to demonstrate their levity and sense of humor, and this is only Fin Fang Foom's debut. ~ Charles Spano
