This is one to discover
This is one of the most interesting double albums in funk history.
All high school players, from a place called Kashmere Gardens High School in Houston. The name pretty much tells you what that place must have been like.
Conrad O. Johnson, who is still living in his 90s, led this band and often took them from their regular classes to gigs and competitions, with the blessing of the Kashmere Gardens principal, a drummer, and much to the chagrin of th academic teachers at the school.
These guys can really play. Sure, it's a little loose in spots, and the recording quality is not always the best. But mostly it's grippingly gritty and a gem from the Golden Age of funk. Some of the recordings are foreshadows of future records by Earth Wind & Fire and others.
This is one album to get to know before you die.
