Through my high school years, this calculator really helped cut down the time on solving complex equations. Graphing is more precise on this device and it the font is cleaner as well. Gaming on this calculator is a WHOLE LOT BETTER than the 83's/84's. (Although if you’re a student you shouldn’t be gaming.. hrm hrm..)

This calculator is a little tricky to use. I never opened the manual myself and was able to figure out how to work this thing. All my buddies use this in their math class. I am currently a major in automotive technology, this calculator helped me found all the calculations I needed. The 3d graphing feature is by far the greatest feature for someone in my major.

Download the software for notes and put notes directly onto your calculator!

For people who are going to be taking the SAT's.. WOW this thing will cut down times literally in half. (Learn to use it first) This thing is by far the best investment I have made.

Amazing functionality, puts all the others to shame!

Strengths: AP Calculus, AP Physics, and Engineering Capabilities.

Weaknesses: Software (TI-Connect) to put programs on the calculator could be easier to use for those not computer oriented.

Summary: For a few years, I had the TI-86, and for graphing purposes and playing games of course, this was all that I needed to do. But when I went into Calculus, graphing alone was not enough. The TI-89 Titanium performs integrals and derivatives, and with Calculus Tool (program that you can download from the TI website) you can even do implicit differentiation. Also, with another download it is possible to do volumes by disks and washers.

Now that we have put some very helpful calculus function behind, it is a very helpful physics and engineering tool. From 34 physics (including circuits) constants (from -1.602 X 10 to the 23 to Avogadro's Number) to graphing analysis of buildings for civil engineers, this calculator can do it all.

The interface of the calculator is the best. I was continually clinging onto the TI-86 through the calculus year until finally me friends convinced me otherwise right before the exam. But even more convincing was just how the calculator worked. Instead of getting a large decimal for the cos of Pi/2, you get real answers like (radical 2) /2. (The format looks like it would in a math text book.) Also amazing about it is the simplicity to use it. The manual is a little less than 300 pages, but the calculator does so many functions that if you are looking for specific functions, then you can simply skip many sections that may not be of use to you (after all, we are all not nuclear physicists!).

One difference between the TI-89 and TI-89 Titanium is memory. The Titanium holds upwards of 500KB of ram, as the TI site says, which is much more than just the 89. This way, you can download a lot more physics, math, and game programs in case you ever get bored in History 101 (for the most games, go to ticalc.org). And this brings us to the transfer ability. The Titanium, unlike the regular 89, has a USB port for connectivity, so you do not have to use those old serial ports anymore. The calculator comes with the USB cable for connecting it to your computer along with a USB unit-to-unit USB cable link directly to other Titaniums. Concerning the transfer process from computer to Calculator, the software (it comes with it) is easy to setup, but can be difficult to use if you do not know whether to archive the file to you r calculator or send it as ram. But even before that, sometimes the program fails to communicate with the calculator so you may have to unplug it and plug it in again before it will work completely. But again, if you can find someone that already has all of the programs, you can just use the unit-to-unit cable and get the programs from them.

Therefore, if you are looking for the integral of the ln (2x) + e to the 2x +25x or just plain multiplication, the TI-89 Titanium can do it all quickly ans easily, providing non decimal answers unless you want it to (love that feature). With the TI-89 Titanium you are control!

It's an investment of money AND time--worth it for both

Pros: Powerful. Many, many features. Can do things that TI-83's can only dream of.
Cons: Menu structure and button layout can bring new users to tears.
Bottom line: Spend a good amount of time learning it, and this calculator will become your new lifeline.

For most people buying a calculator, you get what the teacher tells you to get, because you're in school and you're getting it for math or science class, and picking something else will either leave you at a disadvantage or an advantage that will get you in trouble for cheating. That being said, occasionally you're given an option.

Having used both the popular TI series (TI83+/84 and the TI89), I would say that the TI-89 is a choice you should make only if you're sure that you're ready to invest a serious amount of time learning how to get around. For the most part, the TI-89's menu system is vast and navigating it can take time. While this is partially a good thing (as it's indicative of the many features), it can be quite frustrating to a TI-83 user. That's right, even a TI-83 user will have to learn an entire new menu tree. Don't expect to be able to find things on a TI-89 based on instructions given regarding a TI-83.

Yeah. It's complicated. However, the TI-89 CAN be mastered, and doing so will reap great benefits. Poking around the menu system and the catalog (which now includes help on each item by default), you will discover features and commands that blow the TI-83 out of the water. There's a reason most teachers won't allow this calculator in calculus class.

All in all, it depends on the user. Like many things in life, the trade-off is between ease of use and in-depth control. I took the time to figure it out, and I'm glad I did.

The calculator was brand new. Don't know how they keep the prices so cheap, but it is exactly what is in the store. Purchased it for my son going off to school to study engineering. He uses it every day.

This calculator, which is required by my daughter's well-known prep school for all students, is truly fantastic. It has allowed her to sail through all standardized college admission and AP tests with near perfect scores, as it enabled her to focus on the problem-solving aspects of questions rather than rote calculations, which had been a problem with prior calculators. I wish I had had a TI-89 for my math and science studies. And despite its initial cost, I find that one can resell it for almost full value after using it for a couple of years, so it really costs much less.

I bought this for my son for Christmas. He is in 11th grade advanced placement math classes and they use the TI 80 series at the school. I was hoping that by buying the one a few steps up, he could use it in college as well. This is an awesome calculator and truly does more than many peoples home computers could even do if you wanted to work on math or engineering types of problems. One thing I will say is that if your school uses the 80 series TI Calculators, dont expect that they will know how to properly set up or help the student with this series as it is a lot different. My son has gotten by with it because his teacher took the time to learn how to program this one for what they do in class. A great piece of electronics that I am sure will last forever and still do things he will never need to do :)

  Great Calculator

I'm a high school Calculus teacher and heartily recommend the TI-89. Unlike the TI-83/84 series, the TI-89 can do text based derivatives and integrals (including those integrals by parts, partial sums, trigonometric, etc.) and give you the answers in text (not just numerical approximations). The only difficulty for those currently owning a TI-83/84 is that the TI-89 is menu driven (as opposed to command line driven). It could take a little getting used to if you've already trained yourself on the way the 83/84 works. The 89 can also calculate infinite series problems for you. The TI-89 is legal on the AP-Calculus AB and AP-Calculus BC exams. If your concern is a different exam (ACT, SAT, etc.) then you'll need to check those separately to see if the 89 is allowed.

I did a bit f research and decided the TI-89 was the one to have. The slightly used unit saved big $$$ but looks brand new. All of the cables and the original CD were included. The vendor shipped it promptly and it was packaged well. I would highly recomend them to anyone looking for a great calculator at a great cost.

I love this calculator because it really helps me in classes. I'm studying to be an engineer and there is a lot of math involved. There is too many formulas to remember and this calculator helps me with things I do not remember and helps remind me of other things. Classes would be so much harder without it.

Has all you need and more!! I have only begun to learn how to use it. I am taking Trignometry and do not need it for that, but will need it in courses to come such as Calculus and beyond. I believe it is fairly easy to use, if you have someone to teach you that is familiar with the TI-89.

I have used the TI-89 in the past for quite some time and I decided to purchase one for myself recently. It has all the tools and the power to do any kind of math that comes my way, whether it be Calculus or simple arithmetic simplifications. The size of the Calculator is no bigger than the other TI Graphic Calculator series and the weight is manageable. Although this calculator is complex in nature and takes some time to get used to it, it does give you everything you need for the price. It is one of the most powerful handheld graphing calculators I have ever used.

The calculator itself is top of the line. Powerful, large memory capacity.
What ever you do, do not upgrade the operating system to version 3.10 unless you have the TI graph link cable. TI does not tell you that upgrading using a USB cable your computer will not recognize the calculator. You will also have a difficult time re-installing the old OS.

I needed a calculator for my son that would last thru college. I couldn't see spending $150 in a retail store for this calculator for a 14yr old(no matter how smart and mature). The calculator does exactly what it claims to do and my son can finish his homework in a matter of minutes. The best thing about this calculator is it's value.

TI-89 Titanium: The Swiss Army Knife of Calculators
Review created: 07/30/08
by:

This calculator rocks bar none. It has all the features of the TI-84 although the layout is not as straight forward as the TI-84 (you might actually have to crack open the manual to figure out how to use it properly), but it makes up for it by offering almost DOUBLE the Memory and some very useful Apps. This is strictly a college level calculator (most specifically for engineering) with tons of useful Engineering oriented applications. It can also perform advanced calculus operations with a few keystrokes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Engineering & Science Majors. if your still in high school (or non-engineering/science major in college) I would recommend getting a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition instead since it is more high school oriented than the TI-89 Titanium (which doesn't have as many cool GAMES and personalization options available). Bottom line is the TI-89 Titanium is a more grown-up version of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, that leaves behind some of it's High School attributes in favor of more college/professional applications. As an engineering student I highly recommend it to both students and professionals alike. If you are shopping for a college level calculator with everything you could possibly need, look no further.
