This device has a rather steep learning curve.
I recommend that you purchase the device for school about a week in advance to read the manual and get acquainted with the features of this excellent calculator.

I used this device for a college-level Statistics and Probability class. The performance was flawless, including the link between the calculator and the PC. Again, debug this USB connection before class starts so that you can "hit the ground running" once class starts. The software installer is fairly straightforward, but downloading software updates from the TI website can be a bit confusing. Be sure to RTFM (Read The Freakin' Manual).

The website installer automatically places a copy of the periodic table in your calculator for use in Chem class.

I highly recommend this device over the older and slower TI-83 models.

  Great Calculator
Review created: 09/01/06
71 of 75 people found this review helpful.

I bought 2 of these actually, the first cause i needed a calculator, the second because my first one got stolen. That should say two things, one that it is good enough to be stolen, and two that it is good enough for me to buy a second one.

For the money, this calculator is a great deal. It has plenty of memory, great screen clarity, great battery life, and the controls are fairly easy to get used to.

There are plenty of games you can find to add to the calculator, also its data cable is a simple mini-usb cable so if it doesn't come with one, or you loose it, its very easy to replace.

This calculator has almost 8 times the memory that the TI-83 has which means you can store more games, apps, and files on this calculator then the previous TI-83.
The TI-84 plus has great screen clarity, its very easy to read during low light situations and outdoor light situations.

Texas Instruments is the most popular brand of graphing calculators currently out there which means that you can transfer files between pers easily, and you can figure out problems easier than if you had a no name brand.

All in all, the TI-84 is a brilliant addition to the Texas Instuments Graphing Calculator family, and a worthwhile tool to anybody in school or work.

Hope it helps!
-Jack

  The New Ti-83 Plus

This is the new greater and better version of the Ti-83 plus. There is also a TI-84 Plus, but it has less programs than this silver edition. Not only is this calculator great for checking your math and graphing, but it also has helpful programs to help with other classes. The study card program can be customized for any class. Another nice feature is the removable faceplates that allows you to customize the look of your calculator. This calculator is the only one you will ever need unless you plan to go into Calculus or beyond. This is great for use from junior high checking math and high school graphing to college algebra and daily life calculations.

  TI-84 Plus Graphic Calculator evaluation
Review created: 10/06/06

I bought two TI-84 calculators, one for my son in college and he told me this was suitable for his calculus needs.

I bought the second one for my daughter who is taking AP Calculus at high school and she said the next model the Titanium 89 has more features but the 84 is better because at the AP Test speed is critical and the following model requires more steps and you loose speed; I recommed this model for High School students and while it is usefull at college also I rate this graphic calculator as excellent.

Great for higher level mathematics. Its always handy.

I've had this calculator for over a year now and it has never failed me. Texas Instruments does a great job with all of their calculators. The TI-84 is personalizable as well with optional faceplates. My son is using it for his high school classes right now. It has much more memory space than the previous calculators and can become an organizer as well. It is also great for that interminable study hall with its many games it can hold. I think it is a necessity for at-home or at-school use, especially at home. Unless you want your child to struggle quite a bit while solving linear equations when the calculator can do it for him or her quicker or just to check their answers, I recommend buying this for you or your child. You never know what it can be used for and can be upgraded. It will definitely come in handy.

  TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator

I find it very hard to rate a calculator like this one. I never had to use a graphing calculator before I bought this one. It was very easy to learn how to do the "basics" but I have yet to tap into its potential. After taking the TI-84 through Calc AB and Calc BC I found it to be very reliable and helpful on homework and during tests. All over the internet you can find guides to help you learn how to do more advanced tools. Overall I would recommend this calculator to anyone going into high school or college math/science.

  Excellent calculator !

This calculator is identical to the TI-84 Plus except that this "Silver" model has additional memory. It has the same functions as the TI-84 Plus. This model is excellent for all math up to and including all high school math, plus some college calculus. For most people, this calculator will suffice through college. Only more advanced engineers, scientists and financial experts would need something more.

In addition, this calculator is approved for use on most aptitude tests including SAT and AP mathematics.

I tutor high school mathematics, algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus and, while the TI-83 is adequate for anyone, I recommend that, if you can afford it, spend a few extra dollars and get the TI-84 Plus Silver.

Consult with the TI web site ( http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/nonProductSingle/graphing_course_comparision.html ) to see which of the "high school" calculators (TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver, TI-89 Titanium, TI-Nspire) is right for your child's education level and your budget. For all high schoolers, I recommend the TI-83 Plus as a minimum.

  a better looking ti-83?
Review created: 12/19/06(updated 01/14/07)

Yeah pretty much. All the functions of a TI-83 are there but it happens to be in a different housing.

The major separating point aside to the cosmetics would be the memory as it nearly has 3 times the 83's but what other applications do you really need to use up all the memory?

I used this in high school algebra and calculus and found it to be a must. I upgraded to the 89 of course and never turned back.... (Yes the 89 is by far better).

This calculator is great for high school, SAT's, ACT's, and other standardized tests. It helped me in chemistry, and physics as well. I highly recommend this for the average high schooler but for the money, the ti-89 would be something one should look into.

Great calculator for high school and beyond
Review created: 08/01/08

LOVE this calculator - it has all of the features and similar functionality to the earlier models (TI-81, 82, 83) so anyone familiar with those will have no problem using this model, but it has tons more power, the silver edition in particular. Lots of memory and processing power. You can download everything from day planner/organizer programs to math tutorials to games, just hook it up to your computer using a USB cable (widely available, if not included in your purchase already). For the fashion-conscious, you can change out the faceplate and cover to suit your style, much like some cell phones. So far I haven't come across anything I consider to be a drawback, other than price; they can be quite expensive. Consider buying a used one at the end of a college semester when students are selling them off.

As an algebra teacher, I have long recommended that my students pick up their own graphing calculators, and the TI series is excellent for high school and beyond. It's a bit more than your average middle school student needs, but this model is one that should hold up into college, for most students. (not sure it'd get you through an advanced engineering program...)

Overall, the 84+ silver edition is a great tool and gets high marks from me!

This calculator is great! I recently returned to college and used it for College Algebra and Statistics classes. The most popular programs are already loaded and those that are not can easily be downloaded. The USB cable is a must to reach this calculator's full potential. I am extremely happy with my purchase and plan on using this item for years to come.

Pink is in - yellow is not!

I am a math teacher. The TI-84 plus graphic calculator is a must in high school math. I picked the pink one because it is easy to find with a classroom full of students who are using yellow or black calculators.

Remember when buying a calculator online. YELLOW calculators are sold to educational institutes only. If you see one being sold on ebay, it was probably stolen from a school.

"BEWARE" Product scam!!! NOT SOLD AS ADVERTISED !!!
Review created: 05/22/08(updated 05/23/08)
by:
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

THE AD FOR THIS PRODUCT SAYS:
"PLEASE NOTE: If an accessory or any other item is NOT pictured and/or specifically described in the above listing then it is probably NOT INCLUDED with this auction"....
That makes sense right? .... SO one would presume that if the same Ad say's .." ( Cable included)".... ....IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED... right?...right? why because using logic... if it's not shown or listed it's not included and if it is shown or listed it is included.....!
BEWARE !... This is not the case with buying this product . The product is being falsely advertised. I bought this product because the Ad specifically said: "(cable included) that can be used to share files with other calculators or to connect to PCs or optional presentation tools. Cables required to connect the item to a another calculator or computer. "
So I bought the product thinking it comes with the appropriate cables needed as described in a whole a paragraph identified in the Ad..
The ad also say's "The seller, assumes full responsibility for the content of this listing and the item offered." I would feel better about buying this product if this was actually accurate!
Ebay was blamed for providing the wrong information about the product and special cable in the Ad. Although I was offered a return I decided not to return the product and to just buy the special cable myself. I did this mainly because along with the false product description (in terms of the inclusions) the ad also said :"If an Agreement has been made for you to return the item, You the BUYER will be Responsible for all return Shipping." Soooo ultimately it would have cost me more to repackage, and return ship the darn thing (which I wanted to keep anyways) than to go out and buy my own special cables. THIS feels like a product SCAM! .... a way of hooking you in to purchase a product, then not supply you with a required piece forcing you to have to spend more to get what you need. Although the product package is misrepresented, the calculator alone works well and is a good product.
BUT having to go out and spend more time and money buy the missing cable takes away from the overall products value as advertised. Saying a special cable is included and then not supplying the extra value of the cable. (which retail can cost anywhere from$ 10-$25 plus the drive & Gas!) ....makes buying this product package feel like I GOT RIPPED OFF by a SALES SCAM and FALSE REPRESENTATION in the product Ad. The overall experience with buying this product is very negative, because I was lied to about what was included thus giving the product a different value to benefit ratio than what I was led to believe. Beware of buying.

Fabulous deal on a TI-84 Plus Silver

I purchased this calculator for my daughter in 9th grade. Last year I also purchased one for my son as these are required once they enter High School. The one I bought on Ebay for my son was brand new in the package. This one however was sold as USED but it was GOOD as NEW and I saved quite a bit of CASH buying from Ebay rather than a local store.

The seller was proffesional and shipped the item very quickly.

I am a seller on Ebay and I always look here first when wanting to make a purchase.

My daughter was required to get a TI-84 for school. I checked out the store prices and found them to be $130. I discovered the the TI-84 Plus Silver was basicly the same price, but did much more. I was about to get a brand new one on E-bay for $92 (including shipping) and a used one, for a friend for $75 (including shipping). They are very nice calculators and if your school requires one, ebay is the way to go.
