Album Notes Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars, mandola); Neil Peart (drums, hammered dulcimer). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and Reaction Studios, Toronto, Canada from January to March 1996. In 20-plus years together, Rush has rarely varied from its basic formula--two parts musical chops, one part lyrical smarts, and one more part musical chops. This power trio knows its strengths. Drummer Neil Peart writes intelligent lyrics here about global subjects ranging from the Internet ("Virtuality") to comparative religion ("Totem"). But it keeps coming back to the trio's musical interplay, and Rush's ever-ready willingness to experiment with it. Alex Lifeson adds a nice touch to "Half The World" with a mandola, while Geddy Lee's synthesizer flourishes and off-kilter rhythm on "Time And Motion" are vintage Rush. The most exciting demonstration of Rush's group synchronicity is on the instrumental "Limbo." It starts with the sounds of clinking chains and a bubbling cauldron, before charging forward--occasionally soaring--on waves of guitar, synth and disembodied voices (including a sample from "The Monster Mash"). This is the sound of an intellectual band smart enough not to take itself too seriously. Editorial Reviews Mojo Entertainment Weekly (10/04/1996) | Find errors in the product description? Reviews Review created: 09/27/07 by: ddisacrybaby ( 0 ) 0 of 1 people found this review helpful. I ordered an item off of ebay from ddmusk and gave him negative feedback. He was so infuriated that he called my home and threatened and harassed my child saying things about what he was going to do to me scaring him half to death in order to reach me and then when I called him back he proceeded to harass and threaten me, my family and my work until I agreed to remove the negative feedback. I wish now that I would not have caved in and removed the feedback because I did a search of his other feedbacks and anywhere there was neutral or negative he blasphemed that person in print (just like he did to me) and in most cases got them to withdrawal their feed back as well. I write this as a warning to anyone who decides to deal with him – if you find that you are not satisfied with his services and are brave enough to post it be prepared for harassing phone calls and verbal threats to you and your family. He can’t handle rejection, he will defame you on the ebay feedback and then threaten to bring defamation of character law suit against you and amongst other things he has a very foul and vulgar mouth and does not care what he says to children, scaring them with his threats. Unfortunately ebay can’t do anything, the police can’t do anything because I didn’t tape it, and he didn’t call again after I agreed to remove the negative feedback, and the better business bureau can’t do anything. So I implore you to stay away from ddmusk’s ebay store. Review ID: 10000000004433931 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 09/02/07 by: 0 of 1 people found this review helpful. The actual disc is in fine shape, but I did not receive the jewel box and cover. I just received the disc. Please inform a customer you are only giving the buyer the cd only, and not the box it comes in. Review ID: 10000000004269971 Was this review helpful? I am a Radio DJ and did not have this in my library for station play. When I first heard the entire Cd, I was so Impressed with these cuts. Although, they are not mainstream songs that get a lot of radio play. All the cuts on this CD are excellent. My listeners love the songs I play from this CD. Report this review Review created: 08/26/03 by: flamepillar -- a member of Epinions Pros: Excellent rock music with bullying guitar work and outstanding drums (but of course!) Cons: That's for you to decide Good old Rush.. you never hear much about these guys. While some bands get praised to high heaven and others get branded with such terms as "overrated", "superfluous" and "pretentious", Rush are just kind of there. Even now, though, you might still catch a classic rock station spinning some "Tom Sawyer" on an overcast brunch hour. And it has been my experience that Rush have the most devoted fan base of 'em all. I would never have known about Rush if not for Curt, an old buddy who worked at the Golden Pantry with me (there's RATS in them thar stores, RATS I mean it!). He got so excited about.. Some of the songs are plain. (Disclaimer: Those looking for a brief description of the album will find what their looking for in the "Review Body" section. The section titled "Track Reviews" is meant only for those who want to read detailed descriptions of the songs, and they do not constitute the essence of this review. Lastly and most importantly, this review is not necessarily written by the point of view of a Rush fan.) Overall Score: 4/5 Best song: Time and Motion Worst song: Dog Years Review Body: It was now a comfortable distance from the late '80s, and so Rush was allowed to release their best album since Moving.. Cons: 'Time and Motion' just doesn't sound right. Author's Note: This is a complete re-write of an original (and woefully incomplete) opinion I posted several months back. Test for Echo marks a sweet sixteen of sorts for Rush. This is the 16th original studio album that they have released, their final studio album released in the 90's, and some thought, until very recently, that it was their final album - period. Thankfully, Rush is currently (as of July 2001) hard at work on their 17th studio album due out in early 2002. But had this been Rush's curtain call, then they would have left the music world as they entered it - full of fire, full.. Review ID: 10000000000246101 Review created: 05/03/04 by: tmm2112 -- a member of Epinions Pros: Solid album with good balance of heavy and melodic rock Cons: Possibly their last good album After their return to a more heavy rock sound with Counterparts , Rush wasn t about to abandon a successful formula. Their pop sensibility is now more balanced with old time rock chops, which sits comfortably in the musical landscape of the late 90 s. Grunge is dead but it left the industry deeply scarred and thirsty for more aggressive music than the New Wave fare of the 80 s. This album is that and more. Rush now has a popular following of fans who ve been weaned on their progressive sound and intellectual lyrics. Their true musical genius is evident in the way they craft dynamics into... Cons: May not appeal to 70s and 80s Rush fans. While I really liked the album Counterparts, I found that as time went on I liked it less and less. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a great album but it is not the masterpiece that I thought it was when I first started listening to it. Test for Echo is a different story. Test For Echo was a Birthday present to me from one of my buddies. I wasn't expecting much because at the time I was starting to get a little tired of Rush and was looking for something new. Test For Echo completely changed my mind on that and reminded me why I was ever a Rush fan. Test For Echo has a very peaceful...
