Terror is a Man (2003, DVD)
Review created: 11/01/07(updated 11/01/07)

I consider this a classic(BW)horror movie and I remember seeing it as a kid and being scared out of my wits. Viewing it again as an adult, I found it to be more than just a horror film. While it was still a bit scary, I did not jump out of my seat. Terror is a Man is a story about a scientist attempting to artificially speed up the evolutionary process in organisms. With the assistance of his wife, he performs surgeries and conducts evolutionary experiments on an animal hoping to raise it to the level of man. Over time, his wife begins to despise what he is doing to the animal and is afraid for her life. Things go awry and the animal escapes killing some of the islanders until finally, the surviving islanders vacate the island. Meanwhile, a shipwrecked sailor washes ashore on the island and is taken in by the doctor. He becomes the protagonist of the story, falls in love with the doctors wife etc. etc., sort of saves the day? Terror is a Man is not just a mindless horror film. The storyline and acting are first rate. There is some amazingly fine camera work which sets the tone of the story. It is a poignant story, a vehicle for addressing various moralistic issues in a unique way, especially the issue of scientific boundaries. Where does one draw the line between science and God?
