Recorded at Cove City Sound Studios, Glen Cove, New York; Platinum Island Studios and Power Station, New York. Taylor Dayne is a powerhouse singer, and her debut TELL IT TO MY HEART convincingly showcases her varied talents as a vocalist and interpreter. Bringing a rock background and a strong R&B sensibility to dance music, Dayne rips through a series of first-rate dance-oriented tunes like "Prove Your Love" and the title track. She roars, growls and bellows her way through ten tracks, showing off a commanding voice almost too powerful to be captured on record. But she also demonstrates impressive self-control, as on the effective R&B ballad "I'll Always Love You," and the challenging pop tune "Carry Your Heart." The Honey Cone's oldie "Want Ads," the Motown-ish "Where Does That Boy Hang Out," and "In The Darkness" have an updated girl-group groove. On "In The Darkness" Dayne loses some of the adult intensity of her more contemporary numbers, letting loose with a younger, more innocent sound. Other strong tracks include the robust hit "Don't Rush Me," where she again exhibits mastery of her powerful, athletic voice. Taylor Dayne can be as soulful as Whitney Houston, and as vocally flexible as Mariah Carey, but she adds a grittiness that makes her rhythm and blues come from the gut.
