The author was using humor to make POW life bearable.

A great book, a true story about the defense of Bataan and life as a Prisoner of War of the Japanese.
The author's experiences mirror many aspects of other Americans who fought to defend the Philippines from the Japanese onslaught. Much like Sidney Stewart who wrote "Give Us This Day," Colonel Hibbs was with the 31st Infantry Regiment. This was an American Unit and part of the Philippine Division along with the 45th and 57th Infantry Regiments.
As a medical officer, he had unique experiences. After the collapse of the US and Filipino defenses in April of 1942, he was taken to Bilibid Prison and then to Cabanatuan. When the 6th Rangers under Colonel Mucci and the Alamo Scouts liberated Cabanatuan, he was led to freedom from way behind enemy lines.
Friendly Filipinos saved his life more than once.
He dedicates the book to Pilar Campos, a woman who worked on the Manila Tribune newspaper. She was a girlfriend and she saved his life. When the Japanese found his footlocker stored in her house, they targeted her. She ultimately was killed them.
Not for young readers, but a true recollection of the bravest of the brave, men who fought with next to nothing and bought time for the rest of us to get organized.
