Technics SA-DX1040 Excellent Receiver
Review created: 02/08/09(updated 02/24/09)

This is a solid performing Dolby Digital/DTS receiver. It's loaded with plenty of av inputs and outputs. It has several soundfield settings in addition to Dolby Prologic, Dolby Digital and DTS processing. I bought this receiver from http://stores.ebay.com/Electronics-CDs-and-Vinyl-Plus as an inexpensive upgrade from Dolby Pro Logic to digital home theater. The receiver didn't come with the remote so I ordered a factory original remote for $35.00 from newremotecontrol.com (Check them out. They sell brand new remotes for many, many products) This receiver delivers outstanding performance in all of its surround soundfield/DSP modes and it is excellent in 2 channel stereo mode. It has 3 optical digital inputs but lacks any coaxial digital inputs. It would have been nice to have had at least 1 coaxial digital input to give the receiver more digital connection options(but, hey I saved a ton of money on this receiver). To compensate for this shortcoming, I purchased a coaxial to optical digital converter($11.00 @ wesellbargains.com) to connect my Panasonic DVD S53 dvd player to an optical input on the receiver. It tends to run a little warm but it does have a built in fan which kicks in at extreme operating levels. This is not a major issue because I usually run it at not much more than 1/3 power, 1/2 power at most. It puts out a lot of sound at even these levels. If I cranked it all the way up it would blow your socks off! I have owned many Technics products over the years and they have all been excellent for the price. This receiver has lived up to my expectations and it is a solid performer. I run this reciever through JBL J series speakers: front(J900mv) and surround(J800m), a JBL SC305 center channel and 2 JBL PSW1000 10 inch 100 watt subwoofers . Lots of bang for the buck with this setup. I will use this receiver for as long as possible because I am in no rush to shell out more bucks for an HDMI receiver. This will be just fine because I listen music more than I view movies and when I do watch movies this receiver performs flawlessly through the digital inputs it has onboard. When I eventually upgrade to Blu Ray video this receiver will be just fine for that as well. This receiver has an excellent cost to benefit ratio for my home theater. I definitely recommend Panasonic/Technics products and I highly recommend the SA-DX 1040 5.1 channel 500 watt receiver.
