Teaching With Love and Logic by David Funk, Jim Fay (1998, Paperback)

This book is a must have for teachers. It is easy to read, easy to apply, and contains straight forward, simple logic that we often forget about when stressed or frustrated. It helps to reduce the stress load completely and helps to build bridges.

I bought this book because I heard teachers talking about it on online teacher forums.
Though I haven't finished it yet, I think I can safely say it is worth your time. I like how the authors talk about teachers not "owning" every misbehavior; rather, helping kids to learn to be responsible for their own choices.
I am learning from this book to not "get in the emotional state."
If you are a teacher and going home exhausted from all the power struggles, read this book.

This book should be required reading for everyone going into the teaching field! What a difference just a few days of using these techniques has made in my classroom. Morevoer, I have so much less stress because the responisibility for the students behavior, work, etc. is placed squarely on the student and done with empathy and compassion. This leaves the student with a profound sense of their impact on the world and that they can control what happens to them by making choices about thier behavior. I also strongly recommend the Parenting with Love and Logic Series...I only wish I had discovered these books earlier.

This books gives you scenarios that really make you evaluate things you have said or done in the past to make students feel apart of the class and dealing with discipline issues.

This book has changed the way I teach. It is filled with funny, true examples of the problems teachers have while interacting with students. Funk and Fay give logical advice that has helped me find the words to express what I want and need from students. I am continuely reading this book, starting at at the beginning, as soon as I finish.

I purchased this book because I teach and I am looking for a new approach to handling discipline. A teacher I work with recommended this book to me and how she has been using it in her classroom. The book has some wonderful ideas in handling difficult students and the methods that David Funk and Jim Fay discuss are very practical for everyday use. This book has some great ideas about how to put the responsibility for choices back on the students themselves, rather than allowing tough situations to become power plays between students and the teacher. My sister, who is a teacher, uses a lot of these ideas in her classroom and has found them to be very effective. I think many of the suggestions could be modified and used in the home as well.
