I purchased this club with a Diamana 83 regular flex shaft, 10.5 degrees. I played a stiff flex in my R580XD and wanted to try a slightly softer shaft as well as experiment with movable weight technology.

Despite the "Tour Preferred" label, this driver is very forgiving. Much more so than my R580XD. I've doubled my average number of fairways hit. It is the most forgiving driver I've played. High handicappers need not shy away from this club.

It is longer than my R580XD by 10-15 yards. I hit this driver very, very high. One of my partners remarked "pop up" when I first hit in front of him but "pop ups" don't fly 280 yards. Both he and I were amazed by height of my tee shots with this driver.

I realize that high tee shots are not always desirable but I can't complain because I hitting it farther than my old driver. Well-struck shots resulted in my longest drives ever on my home course. One par 5 has a creek crossing the fairway about 290 yards out, I've played that hole countless times and never hit it into that creek until my first round with this driver. I'll have to play from the blues on that hole from now on.

I also purchased additional 12 and 14 gram weights. Right now I play with a 14 in the heel and a six in the toe. This makes for a high swingweight but it's working for me. This might be part of the reason for the high ball flight. I'm hitting a barely noticable draw. It looks dead straight but tails slightly left at the very end. The "hot spot" is high on clubface.

I've played with three different weight configurations and, to be honest, haven't noticed that much of a difference. The weights are more valuable for changing swingweight and can only "fine tune" ball flight. If you fight a big slice or hook, don't expect alot of help from the weights. If you slice, an R5 type D might be a better choice.

I love the way this driver looks and the magnetic headcover is very cool. The shaft and grip are both of very high quality and give the club a good feel. The flex of the shaft is comparable to OEM shafts, not overly stiff for a given flex.

The bottom line is that this club has improved my game. My only concern is that I might have to reshaft it in the future to lower the ball flight. It just seems too high but, then again, I can't argue with the results. Maybe I'll buy a 9.5 degree, if I find a deal on one. Great driver.

Now I know why the TP versions cost more than others. There is simply no comparison whatsoever to non-tp Taylormade clubs. The club is much more solid. No "ting" sound. It sets up neutral at address and flies much farther than other Taylormade drivers I've had. The Diamana "Blue" 83 stiff shaft is perfect for my swingspeed. (Approximately 102 to 105 mph)
This club will be in my bag for a VERY long time. Not that it makes any difference, but my handicap is a 0.0.
Good luck!

As of 6-5-08, I have been through a couple of other drivers since I wrote the first review. Now the R5 TP is back in my bag. Like most of us, I thought I could find something that "gave me a little extra" but ended up with this club again. I am proud to be an owner of a driver that can now be bought for less than $150.00, brand new. In my opinion, it is still one of the best drivers Taylormade ever made.

Awesome TP club that ANYONE can hit long!!!

Great feel, the ability to adjust weights, a slightly heavier shaft make this club better (to me) than the r7 460. It's only 10cc's smaller, but feels much more solid (less hollow). You thought you could hit a 460 long??? Try the r5 tp.

I hit this R5 dual TP 7.5 deg on about a 10 to 10.5 degree launch angle during normal hits. If I put it on a 4 inch golf tee & swing up at it a can hit it on a 15 or 16 degree launch angle.

I weigh 150 lbs I average about 120 mph club head speed my fastest recorded club head speed is 126 mph. I average about 305 yards with the R5 dual TP 7.5 deg. If I swing as hard as I can on flat fairway no wind this driver seems to max out at about 325yards. My longest drive with this driver was 351 yards on level ground with about a 15 mph down wind verified with my lazar range finder.

When I switched from a stiff shaft to an extra stiff shaft I gained 20+ more yards off the tee & the ball is less affected by the wind also.

I was golfing the other day with a unbelievably good 13 year old golfer who could shoot par or even under par he weighed 110 lbs & was averaging about 250 yards off the tee box with his 9.5 deg lofted Titleist driver. He hit his driver on about a 15 degree launch angle. He hit my R5 dual TP 7.5 deg on about a 13 degree launch angle & hit it 270 yards. On another hole that was down wind 15mph he hit his 9.5 deg lofted Titleist driver & my R5 dual TP 7.5 deg lifted driver the same distance both of them 270 yards. He hit his driver on about a 15 degree launch angle & hit my R5 dual TP 7.5 deg on about a 12 degree launch angle.

I bought the Taylormade R5 TP because i wanted a 450 plus cc club head with exceptional feel to it. This club is every bit of that. This club is deadly accurate as well as providing an extra 10-12yds to my drive. Great club for anyone.

The club is a good one and I have been enjoying it very much. I was not happy with what transpired once I was declared bid winner. I do not like PayPal. I prefer not giving out my personnal information. Since I did not use PayPal. The time it took to get the money to the seller, he actually forgot to send the club. I was forced to remind him that it was sold. The check was cashed though. PayPal is not very user friendly and I do not like it. The seller's need to be more flexible, as not all people like PayPal. If they do not want anyone other than a PayPal use, they should state it.

I bought this club to replace the R7 I bought on ebay a couple years ago.
This is a great club and even made greater by the price I paid it was alot less on ebay than in the stores. This club has a large head with a large sweet spot for much better shots.

I have four drivers and found the R5tp with the Diamana that I purchased to be about average. It is longer than the Sasquatch (also a Diamana)but not near as long as the two Bang drivers both with fujikura's in them, a 26.3 and a Zcom 64. My swing speed is 95 to 97 and a 6 handicap, maybe something besides the Diamana would make a difference. Don't know why they would put a blueboard Dia in a club that's supposed to get a high launch angle, red board might be a better choice.

THE DRIVER BOMBED IT DOWN THE MIDDLE, THEN IT JUST CRACKED. I MEAN, IT LITERALLY CRACKED ON THE SOLE OF THE CLUB FROM HITTING ABOUT 8-10 SHOTS. HOPRFULLY IT WAS JUST A DEFECTIVE CLUB.

  Taylor R5 TP Driver
Review created: 09/06/06

I have liked Taylor Made drivers and used them almost exclusively over the last 15 years and have been nothing but satisfied. I worked in golf retail for a little over 2 years and had an oppurtunity to try, and use every product out there and I hit almost all brands the same distance and it came down to the fact that the Taylor 300(at the time) felt the best off the face to me. I have currently the 510tp, R7 TP, 300 TOUr(holy Grail and now the R5 Tp. The R% is my choice currently because of head size and performance, the only thing I dont like is the weight of the Diamana shaft, at 83 grams I believe this shaft should be in a fairway wood not a driver. I prefer a 63 gram shaft myself, but that would be the only negative that I can produce.

This driver could make Charles Barkley look like Sam Snead. When I use I almost feel like I'm cheating. I read a lot of reviews that said it was not a very long club but I found that not to be true at all. I was hitting the ball 30 yard farther than my old driver and it was going dead straight almost every time. Also, I figured the weight system was just a gimmick, you can change your ball flight substantially with different set ups. BUY IT!

I have the r5 Dual TP with the Diamana 83X shaft and it is GREAT. Far superior to the r7 Quad TP. The r5 probably is not quite as long as the r7 when hit perfectly (10 yards or so for me on) but it is much better on mishits. I am a +1 handicap and average 280 or so off the tee with a clubhead speed of around 110.

Shaft in club was not a Tp shaft and instead was a burner shaft which ad did not say. Should have been more clear and avoided vague description so that it was thought to be a tp shaft

First of all I have never liked a driver at 45" in length, I mean my first driver was wooden 43" and had a steel shaft and I could hit it pretty good. Then I moved to metal (also 43") and I could hit it 325 at will and right down the middle. But with titanium came extra length (45"+) and a loss of directional control so I went back to one of my old favorites (steelhead plus 7* dynamic gold x-100)and got my accuracy back (but lost distance). I wanted something I could build with a graphite shaft and a shorter length with out using that ugly lead tape or lead down the shaft and this is it.This driver is now my favorite club. The price on ebay was too low to pass up (99.00 + ship w/ headcover) and the club looked as though it had never been hit. If like me you can't stop tinkering then this is definately the club for you.

  Taylormade R5 Dual TP Driver
Review created: 01/31/09

The Taylormade R5 or R7 TP's have always been tops. I like the hitting power and the distance it gives. The r5 tp is a very solid club and I like the shape of the head. I don't prefer the newer models today because the heads are too big and they are starting to look like watermelons. A bigger head is harder to control.

I deal in refurbishing Taylormade R& and R5's. I pull the shafts and have them balanced and replaced. The result is usually 15-20 yards in distance. The TP;s are twicw the price and much sought after. I reselll them for a nice profit. Shipping was good.

Taylormade r5 Dual Still w Dimana shaft
Review created: 11/03/06

This R5 Dual TP club is better than any other golf driver I have.

The engine of the R5 TP is the Dimana shaft that comes with it, if you have a pretty strong swing speed and ball control this club is for you. It is extremly forgiving and consistant with great feedback. Due to the Dimana shaft. There is minial head twist even the size of the club head is pretty big. I would recommand anyone want to buy a driver to give this one a try.
