I recently sold my R7 with a Speeder 757 stiff shaft and went with a used R580XD with the factory m.a.s.2 stiff flex. Honestly, this club feels MUCH more solid than my R7 and I consistently hit the ball 280 to 290 yards. (We have GPS on the carts at our club, so I know these figures are correct.)With my R7, I was averaging about 270+, so I did gain a few more yards. But what I like most about this driver is the solid feel it has. The club also sends the ball much farther than the R7 on mis-hits. The sound at impact took a little getting used to because it sounds "muffled" when you hit the ball.
This club, even though it is now cosidered old technology, is a very well built driver. It's also 40cc's (440) larger than the original R7.(400)
I'm sure it will be a long time before I try another driver. If it makes any difference, my handicap is a 1.8.
As of 6-19-08, I have discovered that the M.A.S. shaft is quite inconsistent. I tried numerous R580 XD drivers since my original one and none of them were even close to the one I first wrote about. But I believe you'll find that to be true with any stock shaft. The head of this club is still as solid as ever. But now I absolutely prefer the R5 TP with the Diamana stiff shaft. Good luck and hit'em straight!
