For psychotic, pistol-packing Vietnam vet Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), New York City seems like a circle of hell. Driving his cab each night through the bleak Manhattan streets, Bickle observes with fanatical loathing the sleazy lowlifes who comprise most of his fares. By day he haunts the porno theaters of 42nd Street, taking his cues from the violent vision of life portrayed in these movies. As badly as Travis wants to connect with the people around him--including Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a lovely blonde campaign worker, and Iris (Jodie Foster), a prepubescent prostitute he tries to save--his attempts are thwarted and his pent-up rage grows, turning him into a Mohawk-wearing walking time bomb. Scorcese fills Paul Schrader's screenplay with a tragic realism, brilliantly capturing the muck and grime of New York City. De Niro, playing the fragile hero, steps so deep inside his role that the results are deeply frightening. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score--which turned out to be his last--completes the urban nightmare.

Report this review Review created: 02/13/08 by: One of Scorsese's best efforts. He also has a great cameo appearance that is quite disturbing, which keeps in context with the theme of the film. A glimps into the mind of Viet Nam vet Travis Bickle (Robert DeNiro), in mid-1970's New York City. A loner who has disdain for all the 'scum' he finds himself surrounded by, despite the fact that he is a frequent porn theater patron. He falls hard for presidential campaign worker Betsy (Sybill Shepard),the one pure thing he finds in the city, who spurns his affections after he takes her, on their first date to a pornograghic movie - the only type he knows. Betsy's rejection of him begins his true decent into madness, with violent results. Nice little twist at the end provides media redemption for Bickle. Jodie Foster co-stars as Iris a pre-pubescent prostitute and Harvey Keitel as her pimp. Review ID: 10000000005646138 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 09/07/04 by: thevoid99 -- a member of Epinions Pros: Scorsese, Schrader, Chapman, Herrmann, De Niro & Cast. Cons: Not a Damn Thing. The mid-1970s for America was a period where everyone got burned out by Vietnam, Watergate, and everything else. The 1960s counterculture movement had died while America, hit hard by the lost at the Vietnam War, the economy, and the authority of its own government shortly after the resignation of president Richard Nixon after he disgraced himself with Watergate. 1975 was pretty much the year where things just lost its way as unemployment rose and everything looked awful, especially in New York City where during the hot summer of that year, a garbage strike and poverty was everywhere.... Cons: Can leave you with a 'heavy' or 'dark' feeling, not good for kids. When I watch an American film from the 1970s or 1980s I really look for the ones that give us a gritty sense of reality built in. Granted, I don't remember the 1970s at all and in the 1980s I never visited the places most movies in this style are set (NY or LA) but I do enjoy the feel. Taxi Driver is a film from 1976 that gives you a feeling that you could walk right into it and find yourself standing in the middle of 1970s New York. Though the film doesn't appear to have been shot in any special type of camera/film combination the lighting, scenes, and costumes really locked into my mind as.. "Mean Streets" gave us a glimpse of Scorsese's fierce talent in 1973, but it wasn't until three years later that he exploded onto the scene with "Taxi Driver," the story of Travis Bickle, the love-starved and love-obsessed titular character. Travis has become one of the most controversial characters in film history, particularly after would-be assassin John Hinckley modeled himself after the character and went gunning for Ronald Reagan. (Irony Detour: only in our crazy society... Review ID: 10000000004529119 Review created: 01/16/00 by: lemon_lime -- a member of Epinions Pros: Scorsese, Deniro, Schrader Cons: absolutely none In 1976, Martin Scorsese released one of the most important films of the decade, Taxi Driver. One of the most acclaimed films ever made, the movie announced the arrival of Martin Scorsese, placing him at the forefront of the so-called film school generation. The film is a magnificent accomplishment, an extraordinary combination of talent coming together all at once to create a true work of art that, perhaps better than any film before or since, is able to capture the loneliness and isolation of life. Working from a script by Paul Schrader (Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ, Rolling... Review ID: 10000000004046455 Review created: 07/07/00 by: protoguy -- a member of Epinions Pros: DeNiro and Scorcese Cons: DVD version a bit grainy I watched Taxi Driver again last night. I think this was only my fourth viewing. I rented it so my girlfriend could see it. I was surprised that she never had. I think she was getting annoyed with me. I kept saying, This is good. Or, Watch this . The direction is amazing. Not to mention the acting. DeNiro is phenomenal. In one scene, which I have always loved, although it is not one of the memorable scenes , DeNiro is on the phone trying to convince Betsy (Cybil Sheppard) to see him again after blowing his shot. The camera trucks off to the right away from him to show a long hallway and the... Review ID: 10000000003862936 Epinions.com ratings are not included in the item's average rating.
