Better Than 'Written On The Wind'

The trio that did WOTW are back: Rock Hudson, Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone. This time, they are joined by Jack Carson, one of the best comic/dramatic actors around in the 50s.
Without chewing the scenery as he did in WOTW, Stack gives a fine performance as a tormented war hero flying ace forced to do the air carnival circuit. Married to Malone this time around, she is his hook, the attraction that brings in the customers to watch the planes. Carson is their mechanic.
Hudson is the surprise of this film! His subtle performance and his drunken city room scene are the high points of this film. He had originally played it as the book had it - a drunk! The studio beieved his fans would not accept him like that, so he played it sober except for the one scene, where he gave a lesson in acting to all future screen actors ... He was that good!
It is an amazing film in that it was controversial for its day, in topic and presentation. Douglas Sirk directed. An entertaining couple of hours from start to finish.
