Album Notes Mu-Ziq: Mike Paradinas. Mike Paradinas is such a prolific and fundamental figure that it is difficult to imagine the state of electronic music pre-Mu-Ziq. What was it like before he and his fellow Cornwall "mates," Richard James (the Aphex Twin) and Global Communications, claimed dance music in the name of all future "bedroom boffins?" In 1993, Paradinas and Francis Naughton adopted the funny name (pronounced "mu-zik") and dropped TANGO N' VECTIF on James' Rephlex label. An endless supply of sublime melodies and unbridled imagination is Mu-ziq's hallmark, and this record samples the broad spectrum. The title track, "The Sonic Fox," "Swan Vesta," "Phi 1700 [u/v]," and "Amenida" practically leap off the disk. These are Mu-ziqal archetypes, luscious melodies entwined within a whimsical mix of coarse Detroit beats and non-musical percussive noises. Such liquid-ambient gems and well-tempered synclavier works as "Burnt Sienna," "Beatnik #2," and "Whale Soup" represent Mu-Ziq's softer, sweeter side, while other tracks (notably the electrifying, breakbeat-laced "Mu-Ziq Theme" and "Augeam") find a happy medium between the crystalline and the crunchy. This is homebrew electronica so accomplished, of such superior caliber, and so phenomenally influential, that it's hard to believe the album marks the musicians' full-length bow.
