Tangled Hair a beautiful "mess"
I found a new appreciation for Japanese tanka in Tangled Hair. Originally bought this book for the combination of Japanese and translated English text, but extremely happy I did. Akiko-sama would have been a woman to know as described in the acute biography in the preface she was an intelligent and compassionate woman. To read about her is to understand her short poems that hold deep and complex thoughts and feelings. This collection helps to show the fazes and beauty of her life. There are 165 of her poems featured that make for good casual reading not consuming every page in one sitting. They are quick poems so take time and reread favorites. In the back of the book the author has even included notes to each poem. I love her poetry and hope to find more.
