This is a fast, light lens. It is bright and focuses fast. It has been attached to the front of my well used D100 Nikon since I purchased it and the photos are FANTASTIC!! I had decided to purchase a wide angle lens since my old 28-300mm did not cover the area it had when it was on my N90s. I also wanted a bright lens that would not be cost prohibitive and this Tamron fit the bill and more. What a grand surprise when I found that all the filters that I had purchased for the 28-300 fit the Tamron, just an added benifit. One problem I did find soon after was this, don't leave the hood on when using the pop-up flash, because it produces a shadow in the photo. I really don't use the pop-up all that often but in a pinch I do and the first time I did use it I could not figure out where the shadow was coming from. I thought it was the camera strap or something else. What was it? The flash is too low when at 17mm.

Please note: I am not a professional photographer, it is just a very expensive hobbie and one I've been doing for 45 years now.

Wow! a really great lense at an affordable price

I have had this lense for about a month and I am loving it. It's not a professional lense per se but at the price range I dout that there is anything else coming close. I have bought this to replace my kit lense - Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 (which, to my surprise wasn't that bad at all). This lens is very fast (one doesn't need image stabilization with it) and allows shooting in various conditions. I see very little or no distortions througout the range. What's really cool about the lens is that it has f/2.8 throughout the focal range - very useful when shooting indoors. Contrary to some of the reviews, I find this lens to be well built and it feels really solid. Due to large apperture, the lens is a little bulkier than others but this is the price to pay for such a fast lens and for me it's not a problem at all.

  This Tammy Rocks

I bought this lens as a compromise to getting the Nikon 18-55 f2.8 which is three times the cost of this Tamron. The lens is fast even in low light and it's built well. There's nothing that I don't like about this lens and it is a great quality lens for the price.

Highest quality-price ratio in a lens

A great performer at a fraction of the price of the ultra expensive Nikon 17-15mm. The Nikon is definitely better but not 5 times better than the Tamron. I highly recommend it.

Great item, reasonable price and fast shipping

Thanks for the seller's fast shipping! This lens is in great condition so far as I know. Non-original compatible lenses sometimes have mis-focus problems; but this lens is not (at least at 35-50mm f/2.8). Also highly recommended to other Nikon Dx DSLR users.

Very sharp, fast and affordabl, but somewhat unreliable

This lens seems sharper than my Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6. I really love the f2.8 aperature for shooting in low light. I read many reviews before buying this lens. Many had mentioned that the lens just stops working at some point and a "re-boot" is necessary by either turning the camera off and/or detaching and reconnecting the lens. I've also encountered the same problem. But, it's an extremely sharp and fast lens, for a fraction of the price for the similar Nikon brand.

Great Lens For Canon Rebel, D40, D50
Review created: 08/20/09

Picked this Brand New-In The Box lens up for $325.00 on ebay. What a great buy I got for a most excellent walk about and landscape lens. I live in Oregon and shoot a lot of coastal and mountain landscapes in low light conditions as well as bright light. Great contrast and color from this F-A-S-T lens. I tested Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens but couldn't justify spending that much $$$ and needing to haul a tripod to use with it. I have been a Canon user for over 30 years and have a great selection of Canon prime lenses to choose from. This Tamron AF17-50mm replaced my Canon 1.4 50mm on a Rebel XSi and I don't anticipate putting the Canon 50mm back on it anytime soon. I still shoot film but can see that coming to an end except for hauling out a medium format camera now and then.
The seller listed the lens as for a Nikon but corrected it in the details.
