The costuming and setting of this movie are wonderful. We enjoy both the story and the acting. Of course knowing the love/hate between Taylor and Burton during thier lifetime only adds interest as they portray the struggle between Petruchio and Katherina. I would highly recommend this for new comers to Shakespeare as a good comedy to start with. It's a lot more fun, and lighter, than the usual McBeth, Julius Ceasar, or Romeo and Juliet they start kids off with in high school. Enjoy!

This is by far, the best movie I have ever seen, it was acted in such a manner that you forgewt that you are watching a movie. Elizabeth Taylor was phenomenal as Katerina. This movie is highly reccommended if you love Shakespeare and his comedies.

It's better than you've ever seen them

Actually, Shakespeare would have liked the production of this film immensely. He would have loved Burton's full-out comic performance; and Taylor seldom seemed this sexy after Ivanhoe. It's a beautiful production and the acting is magnificent.

And I'm not a fan of either Burton or Taylor.

What can you say? Classic tale with Burton and Taylor at their very best. One of the greatest husband wife relationship power struggles ever put on film. Film reflects their own personal and relationship challenges at the time in the movie. They don't make them like this anymore.

Director Franco Zeffirelli does his usual perfect job with scenery and direction! Perfectly cast with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor (one wonders if this is what their marriages were like)it is also they debut for Michael York who starred in 2 other Zeffirelli films with ROMEO AND JULIET and JESUS OF NAZARETH. Again, both perfectly done!

  Great Classic Moviie

This is a great classic movie. The acting is superb - you don't get much better than Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in their prime. The plot/story line is unbeatable - one of Shakespeare's best comedies. We watch this one over and over and never get tired of it.

Scale of 1 t 10, this is an 11.Shakespear made simpler.
Review created: 08/01/09

When people think of Shakespeare, they think of sleeping. While its true that reading Shakespeare can have this effect, watching it is a completely different story. The old English makes sense when combined with body language. That's just the simplest way to put it. Not only that, but Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were definitely born to play these roles. I haven't seen them in anything else, but I doubt that anything else could possibly live up to this movie. You just can't go wrong with it.

  Fantastic interpretation!

I'm not sure where Burton and Taylor were with their relationship offscreen, but onscreen they give the best performances I've seen with this play. Zefferelli (I'm probably misspelling his name) keeps the tone light-hearted, unlike several modern versions that give too much of a "Stepford Wives" feel to the play, but he gives Burton & Taylor room to give an emotional grounding to the play that feels very genuine. I teach this play in school to get teens to enjoy Shakespeare, and they consistently rate this play as their favorite!

Hilarious film version of a great comedy.
Review created: 07/02/09

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are matchless in this classic comedy. However, while the DVD was released in 1999, the original film was made in 1967. Sets, scenery, and costumes are authentic Renaissance. Franco Zefirelli has taken much liberty in the action scenes and editing, but I don't think the playwright would mind. Immensely entertaining.

  "Shrew" shows Shakespeare's lighter side
Review created: 04/26/09
by:

I remembered this movie from radio advertisements taped back in 1967 but had never seen it. I had always wondered what the movie was like. This is one of Shakespeare's lighter works and good for laughs, especially for fans of the author. Of course, Taylor and Burton are quite natural in their roles. Excellent period piece with over the top costumes, sets, and accents. Bonus features, such as the theatrical trailers, are a nice addition.
