Publisher's Note This introduction to linguistics discusses how language originated, how languages differ, and how they are related to one another, and offers simple vocabulary and pronunciation guides for several languages.
Industry Reviews Gr 6 Up A user-friendly guide to the study of linguistics. In a chatty, conversational style, Cox explains how languages came to be, how they relate to one another, and how they differ. The reasons for the various dialects within our own country, e.g., BEV (Black English Vernacular), are fascinating and should interest students, especially when used in a booktalk. Charts appear throughout and an extensive appendix, which includes simple vocabulary and pronunciation guides for several languages and an excellent glossary, simplifies much of the information. The title is unfortunate, as the author is trying to educate readers to appreciate other languages, and the overuse of exclamation points is at times annoying. Nonetheless, Cox offers a wealth of information. Susan F. Marcus, Pollard Middle School, Needham, MA Lopate
