  Works for adults too

I first read this 20 years ago to apply to my goddaughter. Recently, while awaiting the adoption of our first child from China, I bought it again and it is still right on. This works really well on adults (and husbands) as well, as it teaches us how to listen and VALIDATE another's feelings, which just cuts to the chase and eliminates any smokescreen or confusion. We all need to have our feelings validated and to learn to compromise. Children are so often told by adults to distrust their feelings, i.e. "I'm cold." Mom replies "No you're not, it's warm in here." etc. Since so many children never learn to identify their feelings, hence a difficult marriage in future, it teaches that feelings are not right or wrong, but are okay to have and are okay to verbalize without being threatened with a put down. A really good book to help with everyone you have to deal with from your family to your boss.

This is an amazing book. My daugter is only 5 and she is very strong-willed. She requires the extra mile and she is high maintenence. This book was recommended by a counselor. I borrowed it from the library and only got through 2 chapters and knew I needed this book to have and to hold as my second bible!

I am a Psychotherapist and I bought this book as a teaching aide to the parents of children I see in therapy. This book gives insight & technique to communicate effectively with children. Probably the most difficult thing to convey to parents is change takes time, but using a technique that has worked successfully for many has passed the test of time.

  How to talk to kids....

I am amazed at how much I learned from the first few pages of this book. It has really opened my eyes to the things that I didn't realize that matter to my child. I suggest any parent read it. Maybe they should add it to the "Whst to expect" line of books so that parents can read it before the baby gets here! It is wonderful!

THE BEST BOOK ON CHILD REARING EVER WRITTEN! Also good for childless couples. It talks about how to treat our loved ones with respect and create a positive environment. I'm a psychologist and buy used copies in bulk to give out to patients.

I really like this book. It makes you think outside of the box. It reminds me that our parents did the best they could but there is an alternative to parenting and it is called listening and understanding their needs. The advice worked like a charm but you need to be consistent.

I heard about this book via a township seminar on TV. It's a wonderful book for parents of all age children to read. It's really a breakthrough for effective communication between parents and kids.

The book I bought is in great shape. Good shopping experience.

This book really makes you think!!

I bought this because my son tends not to listen most of the time. And we needed to learn how to handle this situation. This book gives you tons of suggestions, even just flipping through it quickly in a few minutes. It shows you through "comic" type strips of examples and dialogues of what you might say and what would be a better way to say things. This is also a work book that you can write in and work out certain issues. This part wasn't for me but may work for someone else. It shows suggestions for both young children up to teenagers I would say. My children are 2 & 3. And it is appropriate for what I needed. A great book written years ago and should be handed to every parent!

I like that it has work-pages in which I write down how I would react in that specific situation. I've learned how to be an active listener to my children. I've learned how to help them express their feelings in words when they are mad and frustrated. I've learned to "let go" more often. I've learned how to stop blaming and I've started stating facts. This book is great because it is simple to understand and easy reading.
