T-Mobile Sidekick II is slick - but not for everyone
Review created: 09/22/05

The T-Mobile Sidekick II is like nothing else on the market - and that's how the Sidekick is being marketed. Because of its uniqueness - its neither a traditional phone or a traditional PDA - its draws a variety of opinions and tastes. My opinion about the Sidekick though is that everyone can agree that the technology is great, the interface is intuitive, and the gadget is very slick. The personal preference instead comes when choosing rather you'd carry a Sidekick II over a phone (pros: more functionality and more size) or over a Blackberry (different but similar functionalities).

The Sidekick II is full of features that are best of breed among the newest cell-phones and PDAs:

# 240 x 160 pixel screen
# True web browsing - in color
# Built-in camera with flash - good quality
# Calendar & organizer w/ PC synchronization - accepts V-cards
# Photo caller ID and personalized pictures
# AOL Instant Messenger
# Easy & efficient text messaging
# 6 MB email account

AND: The Sidekick II is 25% slimmer than its predecessor.

The Sidekick's big advantage is its capability to easily instant messaging and write and read emails. In that sense it's like a blackberry (have you ever tried to fully type out a email using a traditional phone?!).

The other big advantage of the Sidekick is its sexiness and knack for customization. The Sidekick allows up to 2,000 contacts, a photo album, a complete organizer, etc - so when you are carry a Sidekick, its really you. Of course you can personalize Sidekicks too - there are all sorts of accessories and add-ons that are sold (all of which are on eBay). Both of these reasons make the Sidekick II so popular with celebrities.

According to the "Popular Products Page", Currently the Sidekick II is the most popular T-Mobile cell phone on eBay and the 3rd most popular cell phone overall... for good reason!

  Love My SideKick II

I must say that I am very impressed with my SideKick II. I was originally with Verizon but they do not have a network that will nsupport my travels oversees. So, I got a T-Mobile Sidekick and now I can travel in Europe and have Internet access on my phone at any time. They have a great unlimited Internet for $20 a month and unlimited texting. Compare that to Verizon's $39 a month and $5 for texting you can not beat it.

Only bad thing is that the Web Browser on the Sidekick does not support Javascript. But I am told that an update is coming in the next few weeks that will have support for Javascript.

  Dont Gotta Have It!

My husband got one when they first came out. He loved it. Now he finds he rarely even uses the email and internet service, wich is required, and costs an extra $30.00, when he rarely uses it. Its fun when you first get it, for the first 2 months or so, but you will blow $30.00 when the newness wares off and you are stuck in a contract with internet service. T-mobile will not allow you to get the phone unless you get the internet/email service. The phone itself is fun, but the phone comes with a contract and those are never to fun!

  Sidekick II- great web applications
Review created: 08/11/06(updated 04/18/07)

The Sidekick II has very good reception, a nice screen, and good battery life. Very easy to use the scroll bars, and surfing the Internet is fast as well. The camera/flash takes pretty good pictures. Too bad it does not have a memory card or MP3 player. If you're looking for a good web browsing cell phone, I would recommend this model.

  T-Mobile Sidekick II... It Rocks!!
Review created: 02/04/06

11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I got my Sidekick II last week, and I can't put it down. It really HAS become my sidekick! See, I'm a teen and a high school senior, and I needed a better way to stay in the know. There's always something going on, some kind of get together or some new senior activity, and my other cell phone just wasn't doing the trick for me. I researched the Sidekick II and I got it, and it's well worth the price. Now I have access to my email, I can be on AIM 24/7, I get unlimited texting and picture messaging, and I can go online whenever I need to. I can even get on MySpace, and that's a place where a lot of my friends post bulletins about upcoming school activities. The phone itself is pretty good, loud and clear, and so is the speakerphone. The display is awesome and clear, and the keyboard is fantastic! It's easy to figure out how to work the phone. Even my mom figured it out, and she's not really one for today's technology. The notes application is great. Just today, I was typing a new chapter for this story I've been working on, and when I finished, I emailed it to myself and it looked just fine. The ONE thing about the phone that kind of bugs me is the camera. It's get in a well-lit place, but don't try to take pictures at night because nothing's going to show up. Besides that, the phone is sweet and it's sure to attract some stares wherever you go... So my suggestion is to go out and get one, because it rocks!

Danger Sidekick II - Not a Longtime Commitment
Review created: 11/29/05
by:
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The Sidekick II is an exciting deviced offered through T-Mobile and made the PDA seem more user friendly and available to younger users. Sidekick II has been revamped from the orginal Sidekick, making it a sleeker, more fun version that is extremely easy to operate and has several great options not offered on regular handsets like a web browser, a QWERTY keyboard and a large color display but it does have some downsides.

When I first received my Sidekick II it seemed like I could not put it down! I used it for everything: email, web searches, text messaging, digital pictures ... but one thing I never quite got used to was the size of it especially when being used as a phone. Sidekick II may be slimmer than the original but it still does not make a good replacement for a cell phone. In fact, that is what made Motorola's RAZR V3 phone seem even more appealing to me.

The other problem I have with my Sidekick II is the way that the main keys are used several times in the same combination for different menus. Often times I would accidently answer or reject calls while using the multi-fuction keys. Another example of this problem happens when I unlock my device by pressing two keys at once it also brings up the sound profile menu which is slightly annoying when I am trying to do something quickly.

Sidekick II is undoubtedly a good device overall but like others, it is flawed. I bought my Sidekick II in May of 2005 and I recently replaced it for the Motorola RAZR which has many of the same features but has more cell phone appeal and is less PDA styled. Sidekick II is perfect for younger users especially high school or college aged who will use it more for the easy way to text message and don't use it for calling people as often. For people like myself, who need a phone for long talk times or many calls a day think twice about this handset!

T-Mobile Sidekick II - Worth Every Penny!

I bought this phone because I sell things on Ebay for a living. I needed a way to do completed searches on the road without investing in a laptop. When I'm at a garage sale or flea market and want to know what an item would bring on Ebay I just look it up on my phone. It paid for iteslf the first day I owned it! On top of that it has a built in camera with flash, text messaging, AOL Instant Messaging, and regular email too. All are easy to use and the keyboard is much faster than a phone keypad (obviously).I bought one of the first one's out over a year ago. A month afterwards I left my Sidekick II and my digital camera on top of my car and drove away. An hour later I found them in the middle of a busy street - the camera was smashed to bits but the Sidekick was fine! I drop it all the time and it still works 100%. I cant recommend this enough!

The Sidekick II - a traveling eBay seller's best friend
Review created: 01/22/06
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Okay, unless you have been living under a rock you probably know the basics about T-Mobile's Sidekick II. It is a phone, PDA, camera, instant messanger, email and web browser and more all in one.

I absolutely adore my Sidekick II. Because of the traveling that I do, I need something portable so that I can check my eBay auctions on the web while I'm on the road. No more having to look for web hot spots - I can access the web any time from almost anywhere with my Sidekick II.
It is a lot easier to keep my appointments on my Sidekick as well, especially due to the reminder it can give that a daytimer can't!

The only thing that keeps it from being an absolute 5 on the 1-to-5 scale is its size. It is bulky. The size does keep the keyboard plenty big for clumsy fingers to maneuver though, so maybe it is a 5 after all.

T-Mobile Sidekick II - INSTANT web site access to data!
Review created: 09/19/06
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Although there are a few things that I would like improved with the Sidekick II, overall, I just love my phone. One great feature that I didn't see mentioned too often in the other reviews was the almost INSTANT availability of data that's entered into the phone to appear on the web.

Logging into the "my-tmobile" portion of the Tmobile website allows you to access what they call the DESKTOP INTERFACE. This interface gets you into basically EVERYTHING that your phone has too offer including:
1) Calendar
2) To-Do List
3) Email
4) Notes
5) Camera gallery
6) Address Book

In my business I've found myself on the road selling my signs & graphics and have been able to write up a work order for a new sign, take a photo of a customer's old sign, and then take a PHOTO of the work order. A quick call to the office letting them know that I've taken these pictures and the picture of the work order. My manager then accesses the tmobile web site, prints off the two recent gallery photos (the new sign and the work order) and and they are able to start producing the new sign BEFORE I'VE EVEN LEFT THE CUSTOMERS PREMISES!! Alternately, I could have also taken the photo's and used the sidekick to email them to the shop. I find it easier to just have my mgr. access the site.

Some other examples of this instant shared access would be:
1) A note or To-do that is a grocery list that your spouse can add things to from remote.
2) A dr./dentist appt that was just scheduled could be put into the calendar.
3) All types of customer/sales tasks could be entered by a sales manager into the phone of the road-warrior which may include an appt with a customer, and the relevant contact info into the phone book. Maybe even a note with some sales particulars relating to that customer.

Overall I love my phone. I love the almost-INSTANT access to the data on the web site. The only things I wish that this phone had was 1) a higher-resolution camera than what comes standard 2) a larger resolution screen for viewing web pages and 3) more web browser enhancements (java, activeX, etc.) to allow me to have full access into my Quickbooks Online software.

With a larger screen and some additional web enhancements I would be able to invoice and even take credit cards all through my Sidekick II! Lugging around a laptop is fine sometimes, but have a small pocket-portable device that can do SOOOO much road-warrior functions is a great thing!

I love my phone and can't wait till I get my hands on the Sidekick III!

PRIMARILY FOR TEXT, EMAIL, AND WEB BROWSING

THIS PHONE HAS BEEN A GREAT ASSET TO T-MOBILE. IT IS DURABLE AND A FUN AND INNOVATIVE DEVICE. ITS PRIMARY FUNCTION IS FOR EMAIL AND TEXT MESSAGING. VERY POPULAR AMONG TEENAGERS WHO USE IT FOR TEXT AND EMAIL. IT IS NOT A BLUETOOTH DEVICE. HAS A BUILT-IN SPEAKERPHONE THAT IS EXTRAORDINARILY LOUD AND OF GREAT QUALITY. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PHONE TO ANYONE WHO IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH WEB AND TEXT MESSAGING FUNCTIONS.

the sk2, when i first got it. I loved it. I got the pre paid because I already have verizon. After the 14 days use. I took it back. I got over it, and it's so boring after a week of usage. Its teh same thing the AIM the camera i mean it's nice for T-mobile USERS and who have a contract. But for prepaid or for non t-mobile users I would NOT recommend it's just boring. and it gets to be NO fun.

  Best smartphone (PDA/cell phone)
Review created: 10/06/05
by:
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

All I can say is, best PDA/cell phone combo ever. This is the best smartphone ever. It has a Calendar, Datebook (/w audible alerts and alarms), Alarm, Memo, To-Do list, and much more. You can be on AIM and Yahoo Messenger 24/7 and send as many messages on AIM, Yahoo, or text messaging for FREE (for those who don't know, those are free instant messenging services)!!! Unlimited data and unlimited text messaging for $20 a month. There are cool games and applications that you can download for a small fee like $3-$6 (less than a McDonalds meal).

This also works as a cell phone and it has a cool swiveling LCD screen. The OS and user interface are intuitive and easy-to-learn. You can basically learn how to use this device within minutes. Okay, enough praising... There are only two flaws:

1. They don't let you backup your data or restore it if you discontinue the data service
2. The software and applications are also proprietary, there are no third-party applications like on the PalmOS or Windows.

If you need a smartphone, get either a Sidekick 2 or a Treo 600/650.

  Pimps and Pop Stars
Review created: 06/16/06
by:
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've had my Sidekick II for a year now and can tell you that it is one fun phone to use. The screen flips up in a cool move to reveal the best little keyboard on any picket sized device, bar none. It beats just about every other PDA out there for quality, perks and gimmicks. The camera feature is particularly excellent. Suprisingly good quality pix from a hand held device. I use it now more than my HP digital camera I bought a few years ago. Add the great battery life and you really have a great phone/PDA/camera/everything device, here. Maybe that is why my buddy, the patent lawyer, got me to get it.

BUT, if you , like me, work in a field that requires a blue suit and tie or heels and skirt, then this might not be the best device for you. I have used this phone in a number of business contexts and the response of my conservative colleagues is a mix of envy and derision. One witty colleague looked at it and told me, "I only see pimps, drug dealers and pop stars with those things!" When the chuckles died down I asked him how many pimps, drug dealers and pop stars does he spend time with!

So, if you can move away from the pack, if you are an artist or a creative type, if you are independently wealthy (Paris Hilton?) or if you are a pimp, drug dealer or pop star, this phone is for you! If you have to wear a suit for a living, get a Blackberry.

Sidekick II is a great invention
Review created: 06/08/06
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This device is truly a great invention. It does email, chat, web browsing (cookies, javascript), phone, camera & more. This item is a great business tool that I cannot do without. I can stay in touch with my clients via yahoo/aim chat, email and phone. I can check/edit my ebay auctions, yahoo group posts, check my sites/orders, research, post to forums, shop online, look up directions/phone numbers on the road etc etc. The email functionality is great, allowing you 3 email clients. You can forward all your home pc email to it or set up pop accounts. The chat feature works great as well. I find the QWERTY keyboard to be the best one around. I have tried Nokia, HP devices and they don’t come close. I can type full emails, and have quick aim conversations and I don't feel hindered. This ‘mini laptop’ is the perfect size, any smaller and the keyboard will not be effective. You will love the sidekick.

I got both a blacberry and a sidekick. They are both pretty good. I am envious of people with a palm opperating system on their phone, because of the fact that you can download applications for them, and they can have an mp3 player. Dont get me wrong the blackberry and sidekick are gret, but something like a treo 650 is more functional

  T Mobile's Sidekick II
Review created: 03/04/07
by:
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I decided to purchase this item because I do a great deal of text messaging to friends, but I don't use my cell phone to talk to friends. I felt I was paying too much per month, for my cell phone bill to talk less than 30 minutes a month, but go about $20 or more a month OVER from texting too much. So I decided to get a Sidekick. I have had T-Mobile's service and phones before, so I knew I was getting another good deal. I opted for the Sidekick 2, because I wasn't too sure if I would actually like it, and didn't want to spend all of my money of the III just yet... And the Sidekick II wasn't such a bad idea after all!
