T-Mobile Sidekick ID (T-Mobile)

I have been a sidekick-follower for years now, so I am pretty well versed with the ins and outs of the sidekick world. Here are my 2 cents about the new Sidekick iD, which I purchased today, the day it came out. (April 25, 2007)

In this review, I compare the Sidekick 3 to the Sidekick iD... moreover, what is lost and what is gained in the iD in comparison to the 3.

Basically, here is what you lose:

-EDGE
-MP3 Player
-Bluetooth
-Camera

Here is what you gain:

-MUCH better battery life
-Better construction
-Ability to customize

Lets start from the top. EDGE? Yes, at first, I was disappointed to lose EDGE, but when you pick up the iD, and see the NON-EXISTANT difference in browsing speed, you see exactly how little you actually use EDGE on the 3. Many people don't know this, but you only use EDGE when you're in an EDGE area... Kinda like WiFi. The MP3 player? I never used it, period. Some people love the fact that they can carry their tunes with them in their cell phone... I've got a Zune for that. You just need to examine your need of an onboard MP3 player. Bluetooth? The Bluetooth capabilities on the 3 were dismal at best. The only things you could do were: transfer vCards (address book entries), and use the headset. No transferring files, etc.

Now, on the contrary, the increase in battery life on the iD? WOW. I used to have to be like a slave to the charger when using my sidekick 3. The battery life was plain and simply HORRIBLE. I would have to plan my whole schedule around when I'd be able to charge my phone. It was ridiculous. The battery life on the iD is 2, if not 3 TIMES LONGER on the iD than the 3.

In addition to the longer battery life, the construction of the phone is just better. This one is kind of hard to explain, but you just notice the difference as soon as you pick it up.

And lastly, the iD is easy to customize. To me, this is not that big of a deal... but it IS kinda cool to just change the color of your phone... something that was pretty much impossible to do on the 3.

Well, hope this helps. I think you can infer from above that I recommend getting the iD over the 3... but in the end, its UP TO YOU!

This phone can do it all...incredible easy texting easy to use interface and changing sounds and backgrounds and easy calling great reception and sound. Only bummer is that the phone doesn't have a camera on it.

Never received what was ordered. Only after my complaint was filed, did I receive something. , I received bumpers for he sidekick (worth about $7 each). If I didn't us PayPal, I'd be out of $150.00

My teenage son wanted a Sidekick for his birthday and let me know about 8 months in advance. He liked the QWERTY keypad and the way it flipped open. I got a great deal from a friend of a friend since I had so many months to Sidekick shop.

This is the stupidest phone I have ever known! Unless you are going to use email, etc. and pay the extra $20 a month for the special Sidekick internet connection, this phone is useless. It doesn't even have an alarm clock. And why would Sharp make such a high-end fancy phone without a camera?! And since I am the one paying the bill, there was going to be no internet. But I then misunderstood the Sidekick specialists through T Mobile that downloading stuff was free with the extra $20 internet plan. So I thought he could download a couple songs and then I'd cancel the internet after a few days and only get charged a few dollars. But NOOOOO, all this stuff is extra. On the other hand TMobile was great and refunded half of the charges for me for my misunderstanding.

Without internet connection you can't:
get on T-zones to download ringtones, etc.
save My Fav 5
save sent or received texts
update time and date information

It also doesn't have:
a camera
an alarm clock

You just can't do crap with this phone without the internet. And if you don't have the internet, then the thing keeps searching for the internet connection anyway. This may be a great phone for some, but not only are many of the features wasted on me, it just doesn't provide some of the most basic phone tools. Lara

Although this is most likely a dumbbed down sidekick 3 i love the battery power this is most likely a phone useful for a high school student like me because of its texting who needs a camera, cameras on phones are always fuzzy anyway, the only thing missing is music player but overall its a pretty good phone.

It was for my granddaugther. She likes it okay, but says there are some technical problems. It will do though. I probably won't buy anymore phones this way though.

T-Mobile WINS. The Sidekick iD is a Sidekick 3 with BETTER QUALITY (it does not FALL APART like Sidekick 3s tend to do, and it can survive a drop, which can kill a Sidekick 3,) only minus the camera, music player, and Bluetooth wireless talking. This phone may be officially discontinued (as well as the Sidekick 3,) but their functionality is still the same as the Sidekick Slide and LX (which have replaced the iD and 3.)

The phone has a great display, the BEST keyboard for Texting, a nice selection of games, and WEB SURFING that cannot be replicated on another phone! WHERE is the Keyboard on an iPhone? (Answer: It doesn't have one, and STILL costs $300!) You won't get fingerprints all over the screen on the Sidekick iD, as you do not have to do that. :) I give this phone a 4.5 out of 5, because it is a solid, great phone. Enjoy!

I love the notepad,calender etc and the easy typing abilities with the qwerty keyboard. Instant messenger is handy, and the ability to send and receive emails. Web browser is pretty slow, and hard to navigate certain pages. It takes some time to get use to all the function keys on this phone, but otherwise is great for the basics beyond a standard cell phone. This is a non-camera model, which is great for simplicity.

The Sidekick ID is a phone that is definitely in class of it's own. It's a great little gadget if you're into texting or checking you're email. I thought at first it was a little complicated but once you get used to it it's not too bad. It's not for those that are not electronic friendly. You know yourself, some just like to keep it simple (I'm married to one). The only thing I didn't like is that it can't receive pictures unless it's via email but I know they redesigned it and it's now called the Sidekick LX and Sidekick Slide. So for those of you that want to access your email and internet via your mobile phone this one is great for it. No pictures please. Texting is fast and simple with the keyboard at your fingertips. One other thing I don't like about these PDA type phones is when you call a company that has you spell out the persons name in order to access their extension, the numbers on your phone do not have the corresponding letters so unless you've memorized them you're out of luck. All in all if you buy this phone for just what you need it for and not pictures it's a great phone to have.

This is a great phone and looks and works like new. My old Sidekick lost its life in a soft drink accident. This was a great deal and I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I traded my Pebl for this gadget and it was a bit disappointing. It had most of the features of the other models, except the music and the photo functions. I can't say I missed them. I found the phone to be too bulky and heavy. (Not easy to sneak a text message or two from work). It fell in and out of reception at key times (like when getting directions to a place you have never been to) and it was loud! Overall not horrible, but not great. It was the perfect phone for high school studets, but it just didn't fit into my life as a young professional!

I find that the Sidekick ID (T-Mobile, obviously) is a truly amazing item. The extra-large battery, which takes up the space that a camera would, is extremely long-lasting. I also find it very convenient to use eBay on the go, via its internet feature. Over all, the product is still very amazing. The only flaw is that the internet is VERY slow, even slower than dial-up (I bet that the Slowski turtles would enjoy a Sidekick ID). The Sidekick ID is great for people who don't want to pay too much for a phone, but still want some amazin' features on it.
