I have avoided buying the g1 over the past 3 phones. I have no clue why I decided to ignore purchasing it. The last 3 phones were the Blackberry Curve, a unlocked Blackberry Bold, and the Samsung Memoir. I now wanted a phone that was a little more technical, but fun at the same time. I had the chance to play with my friend's g1 and about fell in love it. So simple, yet advanced. I decided to try out the MyTouch before I chose to do the g1 and realized I did not want a "only" touch screen phone again. So, I up and bought the g1. Let me tell you, what an awesome phone! I have had it for almost a week and I am really enjoying it. The screen is bright and vibrant. The slide feature is very stiff and strong. The bronze color of the phone is very unique. Internet usage is very smooth.
For the technical side of the phone, the 3 pane main screen is great as you can store many applications on each. In addition, putting the applications onto the screen is very easy. Speaking of applications, wow, how simple can it get? The market for the applications is a simple click on an icon, which is a preset on the home screen when the phone boots up for the first time. Click the widget and you are in for thousands of applications. Sorry to use the word "simple" again, but it is very simple to make the phone your own!
One thing I really enjoy about the g1 is the different ways to type/text. You can use either the qwerty keyboard or the screen. You can type of the screen portrait and landscape. Yes, it is not as smooth as the Samsung Memoir, but it's very close.
I guess I can try and name some things I dislike about the phone; get ready because there aren't many. One being the camera. It is, on a 10 scale, maybe a 7.5-8. It is pretty good during the day time, but terrible in the dark as there is no flash. This will be the only part where I will miss the Samsung Memoir. At least, I will be able to use my new camera that I purchased just before I bought the Memoir.
Being the last of dislikes, I was "so-so" when it came to battery life. If you decide to use multiple applications, your battery will decrease at a decent pace. Even if you click out of an application doesn't always mean it closes. If you do not close the applications in the phone's settings, you can see a good day out of the phone. If you decide not to use applications, a day and a half. By the way, this is heavy usage characteristics that I claiming which involves internet usage, texting, and talking. But, to save this, there are a couple of applications to help. After downloading these applications, the battery now has a new swagger. I have added at least an extra 1/2 a day to the phone. Now, I am very pleased with the battery life.
Overall, this has to be one of the best and coolest phones I have owned to date. I can see me holding on to this phone for quite some time. There has already been an update while I have owned it. Even though I'm not too sure what the update was, it's the fact that it happened. The last 3 phones never really warned me about updates. Especially the Memoir. I owned it anticipating an update and never received one. I think that phone came out too soon for its time as there are no applications or updates to keep one happy for awhile. The 8MP camera is awesome, but thats it. As taking pictures got old, I lost hope. Now though, with the g1, hope has found its way back into my world.
I hope this helps some people out. Good luck with your g1 purchases!!
