This is the seventh album from Howe Gelb's Arizona-based band. As with its predecessors, it revels in a glorious mix of edgy relentlessness ("Can't Find Love") and spirited and heartfelt abandon ("Angels at Night"). Gelb celebrates the moment at every turn, allowing moments of studio chatter, false starts, and breakdowns to become a viable part of the completed picture. Guests include Steve Wynn, Juliana Hatfield, and Poi Dog Pondering (who accompanies him on a stirring cover of Bob Dylan's "Every Grain of Sand"). The first-take casualness belies a purposeful artist at work. The sturdy and thoughtful SWERVE is one of several excellent starting points into Giant Sand's large catalog.
