Really, I can see where they were going...

Being what I would now call a Jack Off Jill fan, of course I followed the careers of Jessicka and Robin Moulder into their next phases. It didn't take long to come up with Scarling, and listen to some of their music. "Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole" was the first song I heard from Scarling, and I (shamefully) downloaded the song first to hear it and see if I wanted to pursue it.
On that particular track, I had a hard time hearing Jessicka's voice, but I thought it was due to the quality of the rip. I liked the song, so invested in the CD.
I'm disappointed.
The mixing on the CD was trying to keep Jessicka's voice light and airy, almost ethereal, and made it very hard to hear. I don't buy ice cream to watch it melt, I don't buy fast cars to park them, and I sure as heck don't buy Jessicka's music to not listen to her.
Why would anyone take someone with the little girl range and sheer Richter scale strength in her voice, and make her mute?
The music itself is experimental, and quite beautiful. My problem is that the music is showcased at the expense of the main reason I sought out this album.
It's worth the purchase though, for at least two, if not three of the songs. "Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole" is an exercise in lyrical beauty, as well as ethereal guitar playing. "Crispin Glover" is an exercise in restrained energy, and is the song that I personally find most reminiscient of the Jack Off Jill days. "Black Horse Riding Star" is more likely to appeal to the mainstream listeners, possibly even acting as a good introduction point.
Perhaps this isn't the most flattering review that I've done, but at the end of the writing of this, there is one major thing to point out:
I'm listening to it right now.
