"Sweet Emma" was pianist and vocalist Emma Barrett, who had sung in the bars, clubs and saltier venues of New Orleans since 1910, when she was 12, and who can be heard, still performing vigorously, on this live 1964 recording. Since its inception in1961, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been home to both the contemporaries of jazz greats like Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong and their musical heirs. This collection of traditional jazz standards is an invaluable link over the years to the foundations of this unique American musical form.
