Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (DVD, 2008, 2-Disc Collector's Edition)

By far the darkest, most tragic and moving musicals I have seen in a while. This has to be Depp's finest portrayal yet. We are brought to love and hate his character conjuctively but made to feel sorrow in a time that life was very difficult for not only the poor but everyone. The music is stunning, the costumes period accurate and astonishing and all the characters portray their roles marvelously. (**** out of ****) The story sticks with you long after you have seen it and makes you realize yes, sometimes, life is very cruel.
A must see for anyone who enjoys Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter. It is also refreshing to see Alan Rickman in a musical role (exceptionally acted and befitting) as well as Sasha Baron Cohen. It proves even comedians can lend themselves to darker roles and do sensationally with them.

This is my favorite movie of all time. Who could resist a Burton and Depp collaboration? Also all the characters were amazing with their acting and singing. And now for Johnny Depp, other then his extremely good looks (even as Sweeney Todd) Johnny Depp is my favorite actor because he can transform a movie into fantasy land or a dreadful nightmare. The only words to describe Stephen Sondheim’s musical thriller is simply genus. I give Sweeney Todd 2-Disc Special Edition two thumbs up and five stars for a musical masterpiece.

The combination of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter are unstoppable!

I'm not always a fan of musicals, but this is GREAT! Probably because of the dark cinematography, the blood, the gore, and the horror!

I also got the 2 disc edition for all the GREAT bonus features!

saw this movie when it was in theaters. didn't tell my friends who went with me that it was a musical. they were mad at me in the beginning when i finally did tell them, but by the end of the movie they were thanking me. they loved it that much. it's tim burton and johnny depp at one of their bests. if you're a burton-depp fan you'll love it

I never thought that Tim Burton + Musical would equal such a tragic and entertaining mixture of horror, comedic elements, gothic and charged sets.

A fellow critic of mine said that Johnny Depp was, for once, bad in that he thought the character to be introverted. In that respect, my fellow was right except for the bad acting part. Depp marvelously under-played the title role to fool the audience so that when slashing time began, we'd all be horrified and a bit detached from the cahracter, yet compelled to look as if to justify. A means to an end if you will.

Helena Bonham-Carter, a natural extrovert, was also asked to tone down her act a bit and pulled the most interesting character of the picture: playful, lusty, doomed, bad cook, singer, infatuated of a man she'll never have. Much could be said about Mrs. Lovett's sweet and sour character, whose personality is far from Marla Singer ("Fight Club") or Syrius Black's overacting cousin.

Tim Burton's direction remains at the peak of its capacities. The imaginative director went where no one could think he'd go: a horror-musical. Needless to say many of Burton's followers didn't feel appealed after the oscar-nominated "Corpse Bride", but Burton's direction proves to be up to the task. Instead of delivering a fairy tale for the ages, he gives us here all the ingredients of a fearfuly delicious pie... To that extent, Burton's message about human nature is plain and clear: it's a dog eat dog world and human nature is as ugly as it gets even in the sweetest of looks.

No one is innocent in this movie and everyone is convinced to be doing the right thing, which, by the third act of the movie, comes full circle with a shocker of an ending that would make "Hannibal", "Red Dragon" and "Hannibal Rising" both shake.

You only need see it to believe it.

First off let me say my 20 & 17 year old sons loved it!

Sweeney Todd follows the vicious cycle of revenge as Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) returns home to London to punish those that wronged him long ago. Assuming the alias of Sweeney Todd and setting up a barber shop over Mrs. Lovett's (Helena Bonham Carter) meat pie restaurant, the two enter into a heinous partnership that will allow Barker to exact his revenge.

Not exactly the stuff of most musicals, is it? And the music and lyrics are from Stephen Sondheim, that most complex and witty of American musical theatre geniuses. So the lyrics are filled with puns, & tricky rhymes. Too fun!?

I have never enjoyed a musical so much! Who knew Johnny Depp could sing? A very dark and laughable movie. VERY ENJOYABLE MOVIE!!

Sweeney Todd is the story of a successful man, who because of the greediness of a politician, loses his wife and his daughter. Then, when he returns, he seeks revenge on this man, a woman in town recognizes him as the man from that was done this wrong, and has compassion on him. When he begins as a skilled barber, it goes well for a short time, till he is recognized by a man that threatens to reveal his secret to the town, since that would ruin him, Sweeney Todd decides to kill him in his barbershop. The lady has a sick plan that solves the new dilemma of getting rid of his body. As the movie goes on, Sweeney Todd continues to kill to help out the woman, as she falls in love with him, and he awaits the politician. Then everything unfolds for him when people unexpectedly begin to unravel the plan, in a surprise ending where Sweeney Todd realizes the ultimate fate that awaits determined vengeance. This is an incredible movie, for those who can appreciate a musical, but also don't mind the high amount of blood and gore that go in too. Very artistically done with great performance by Johnny Depp, and success for Tim Burton.

This movie is just perfect! Everything Tim Burton directs, in my opinion, is great. Add a great cast and story and how can you go wrong? I loved it. It has blood and gore of course but the singing (from all non-professional singers...they did AWESOME) and the dark humor and the story line are all fabulous. I can't watch it too many times. The 2 DVD set is well worth getting. Lots of funny inteviews and behind the scenes and bits and pieces that are very informative and interesting. Loved it all!

Johnny Depp does it again -- another spectacular performance -- awesome job singing, especially for someone who doesn't consider himself a singer. Another team success for Depp/Burton.

There are very few movies that are absolutely perfect in every aspect, but Sweeney Todd is one of them. The story is a perfect match with Tim Burton's style, and Johnny Depp was amazing. Every detail about this movie simply works, and the result is a perfect film, albeit a twisted and strange one. The 2 disc DVD is full of special features, including a historical look at the story and its origins. There are multiple making-of features and interviews with cast and crew. There is not a single thing I don't like about this DVD, and I recommend it to any fans of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, musicals, or dark, twisted stories. It will not disappoint!

My daughter loves this musical movie! The music is great and the scenes are too! The story line is better than I thought and the ending was wow.....

I decided to buy Sweeney Todd due to my curiosity about Johnny Depp's singing. His voice was dubbed in Cry Baby even though he made a demo. Personally, I love both movies and think Johnny could've sang in Cry Baby just fine. Oh, and I love musicals.

it was a great movie when i saw it in the theater and wanted to own it so i can watch it again and the singing in it was very good i felt as if they where singing to me and the way it was writin was great would tell everyone about it so they can go watch it themselves

The movie I got on EBAy from this person was a bootleg. It was not only a bootleg but it was the wrong movie it was a old version of the Tim Burton version of Sweeney Todd. I also bided on a 2 disk set but only got the single disk. BUT WRONG MOVIE! I am still working it out with this person.

the acting was incredible, the set and costumes were incredible, BUT the blood scenes were overdone, this is a good movie for people who like tim burton films and the strange and different style that goes with them

What can I say this movie has it all. Tim Burton and Johnny Deep are great together. Check this movie out, you will be glad you saw it. It is a very enjoyable movie with a great cast.

Me and a friend saw this movie in theaters, so when i saw it then i knew i had to have on dvd when it comes out!!! I have always been a fan of musicals but i have never seen a thriller musical before not to mention its part of an urban legend too. Which im a sucker for then as well. The throat cutting was a little much but thats the whole point of Sweedy's chaaracter and action to make him a legend. I love it!!! Warning if u dont like gore viloence of singing then dont watch this regarless that it has Johnny Deep. I love it but some might disagree.

Johnny Depp does an amazing job in this film. He perfectly captures the anguish and rage that has possessed Sweeney Todd because of his wrongful incarceration. Helena Bonham Carter also does a fine job as Todd's partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett. The music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are out of this world. Overall, a wonderful cast that amazingly portrays this terrifying story of love and revenge. Two thumbs up from me!
