Album Notes
Personnel: Kenny Barron (piano, keyboards, synthesizer, acoustic bass); Mino Cinelu (vocals, synthesizer, guitar, mandolin, banjo, drums, percussion, programming, sound effects).
Engineers: Mino Cinelu, Steve Boyer.
Principally recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in September 1995. Includes a transcribed conversation between Mino Cinelu and Kenny Barron.
This unusual collaboration between pianist Kenny Barron and multi-instrumentalist Mino Cinelu is as difficult to categorize as it is to ignore. The duo covers an extraordinary amount of stylistic ground on the session; though, as the title suggests, things are mostly rooted in a New Orleans flavor. However, this is only a single thread running through the larger tapestry of the music; the down-home funk of "Mystere" and the greasy swing of the title track are offset by such curious pieces as the abstract percussion solo "Moon Dance," and "Louisiana Memories (Parts 1 & 2)."
What also makes SWAMP SALLY intriguing is the number of sounds and textures harnessed by the duo. Barron not only tackles his keyboard duties, but also deftly handles the acoustic bass at times. Cinelu, on the other hand, while primarily known as a percussionist, is almost an entire solo ensemble, handling everything from vocals and drums, to guitars and synthesizers of various configurations. While some may find the blend of these disparate sounds daunting, Barron and Cinelu's efforts make for fascinating listening.

SWAMP SALLY is a modest little treatise on the art of the duo, and what can happen when fixed ideas about music become fluid ones...
