By the late 1990s, Elvis fans had plenty of reason to bear suspicious minds regarding posthumous Presley collections, the barrel being seemingly scraped dry years earlier. Such reservations are put to rest by even a cursory listen to SUSPICIOUS MINDS. The two-disc collection captures the period just after Elvis' famous "'68 comeback." He was rediscovering his roots and getting gloriously gritty and funky. It would be the king's last hurrah before descending into Vegas showbiz glitz. These 1969 recordings were all made in Memphis under the sure hand of producer Chips Moman and his eminently soulful Muscle Shoals cohorts. Elvis takes on everything from country ("From a Jack to a King") to churning, gutsy R&B ("Power of My Love") with abandon. Even those already familiar with this material will find reason to cheer in the inclusion of several previously unreleased alternate takes.
