Synopsis Joe Gunther faces painful shadows from his past when a cold case heats up in the 15th police procedural starring the Brattleboro, VT detective. When Klaus Oberfeldt died as a result of the injuries he suffered during the robbery of his store, rookie Joe Gunther--preoccupied by his wife's rapidly failing health--let the primary suspect slip through his fingers and then buried the case for the next 32 years. His failure to act continues to haunt him. When a woman shoots her ex-husband in a domestic dispute, Gunther discovers that the gun used was the same used in Oberfeldt's bludgeoning death, and vows to determine the connection between the two crimes.

"Mayor delivers the strongest entry yet in his Joe Gunther series...with this complex mystery....This is the prolific Mayor's most accomplished book--a character-driven novel that's enhanced by graceful prose and a compelling narrative." (starred review) Publishers Weekly (09/13/2004)
"...Archer Mayor['s]...unassuming voice and down-to-earth style stamp his regional crime novels...with a sense of integrity....[T]he strength of these narratives has always come from the author's profound understanding of his region and from his hero's intuitive ability to relate to the people who live there." New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (11/07/2004)
