Surf's Up (DVD, 2007, Special Edition; Widescreen)

For an animated film, “Surf’s Up” presents a unique perspective in storytelling as it focuses on a “behind the scenes” documentary on the life of a young surfer penguin named Cody Maverick (voiced by Transformers’ star Shia LaBeouf). The film features several themes such as the concepts of having fun; patience; friendship; selflessness; and sadly depression as well. However, this animated sports comedy is certainly one for the entire family as each member leaves the cinema with their own interpretation of the film.

Some things to watch out for: The different colors of the eccentric Tank “The Shredder” Evans’ eyes; Surf’s Up’s classic soundtrack; and surfing promoter, Reggie Belafonte’s (voiced by James Woods) Don King hairstyle.

Strangely enough this animated movie about surfing penguins is one of the most authentic portrayals of surfing ever produced by Hollywood. The storylines are largely hollywood surfing cliches (think "North Shore" or "Big Wednesday") but they are often-used cliches because they are timeless and they seem to work.

The surfing scenes are realistic, even to an experienced water person, and capture some of the excitement, danger, and mystical connection to the ocean familiar to surfers. The characters are fun (especially the baby penguins). All-in-all a good movie for the whole family with enough adult humor to keep an adult's attention.

To really appreciate the value of this film you should watch the included special features; especially the featurettes about the voice acting and the "shaky camera" which detail some of the animation innovations that make this "cartoon" so believable.

Don't be a "smelly trashcan full of poo"; see this movie and catch the stoke.

This is a snoozer would not recomend my kids even said this was boring. Animation was out there to generic. The story was just lame and hard to follow casue it was so boring.

The movie isn't what you expect when you first start watching it. The story comes together through interviews of the characters. There is lots of funny moments in the interviews and the movie ends up being a hit. My kids liked it lots more with the second viewing and it is now one of their favorite movies. There is a few off color remarks that kids usually don't get, but the parents do, in the movie. Overall a good story and movie.

This is really an excellent movie. It shows in depth surfing on the big waves. I really feel like I am out there with them... somehow it makes me think I can do it too... and I cant even swim! My daughter loves this film and makes surfboards for all of her favorite toys to surf along with Cody. Even the Cars figures she has have got surfboards and act out 'surfs up' even when the movie is not playing.

It depicts sibling teasing and such, Cody's frustration with home life, how he really feels about his fathers death, he has a lesson to learn that shows that HE can be the one to change the attitudes of his life.

One downside to the film is the use of the word 'crap' is uses a couple of times and "I can feel it in my nuggets" in one scene, and Tank Evans refers to one of his tropheys as his 'dirty girl'. These are two terms I do not want my daughter just bringing up while playing or in church... etc. So I have deleted those words in the film.

It is all around a great family film if you take them out.

Perfect in length and content for kids of all ages. Some fun slapstick bouncing about and shouting sets the tone. Follow along in this documentary-feeling telling of the rise (and fall?) of Cody Maverick, a young surfing penguin following in the overlarge footsteps of Big Z. The voices are almost incidental although Jeff Bridges does a nice Big Z and Brian Posehn (of TV's Just Shoot Me) is wonderful as Cody's jealous brother, Glen. The story sticks to following our hero, his Zen-oblivious sidekick Chicken Joe and some great subcharacters. The movie avoids getting hung up too much on either redemption (Big Z's) or romance (Cody with Z's niece) while touching briefly on both. In the end it's all about fun and catching that big one!

This movie is great to watch with the family, especially with kids. It's funny and very enjoyable. I recommend it for those who like to have family movie nights. It is a good movie for kids.

Absolutely love the animation done by Sony. I love Hayo Miyazaki's work as so much is done by hand but the light, definition and especially the water scenes
are incredible in this little film. I bought it for my grandneices and phews
and after viewing, bought another copy for them as I kept the original for us.

I love that there is no violence - apparently Hollywood with the exception of
Pixar has forgotten great stories can be told on film without shoot-em-ups.

It is a simple little animated DVD that is done extemely well. Buy it.
The beach scenes with palms blowing in the wind with waves breaking on the shore, the characters and their shadows moving, leaving footprints. Though simple and delightful story, the technology is beyond anything I have seen outside of Pixar. I think SONY is to be commended - well done SONY!

My kids got me to order this and they LOVED it! They are a big fan of Shia LaBouf (sp?) and with him being the main character it made it that much better for them to enjoy.

We love this movie - lots of action and great humor for kids and adults:) And who doesn't love penguins surfing!

I have seen this movie many times now and I still enjoy it. It's funny and enjoyable. Graphics and animation are not "PIXAR perfect" but they are just fine. Great family fun! Highly recommend it!

I bought this video for my grandkids and they sat nad watched it through twice. They liked the penquins they thought they were funny. We were looking for a fun movie for the family and we found it in this movie

Cute movie! I saw this on Pay-Perview and bought it on Ebay for my sons 21st Birthday who is a surfer-Dude In FL.

If your child liked Happy Feet I will recommend this one for you......Very tropical movie that will introduce the surfing and big waves to your child.................Graphics are not that great

My daughter and husband LOVE this movie (I like it, too, but not as much as they do), and we were reminded of that when we got a new Nintendo Wii and the Wii "Surf's Up" game was the first one my daughter wanted to rent. That reminded me that we never got the movie. I purchased it on E-bay and we are happy campers now. Great surf footage, even if it is animated!

the tv previews shows the best parts of the movie. i actually bought this for my kids and from the tv previews they were excited to see it. but when they watched it the said it was alright. they got bored of the tv camera crews following the main actor around asking him questions all the time .yawn i fell asleep during it.

This movie is so well written. It plays on both a kid level and an adult. Wonderful Wonderful....Many Laugh Out Loud Moments!!!
