Well-versed in the supernatural after their father became convinced that their mother was captured by unholy spirits, Dean and Sam dedicated their young lives to hunting down these otherworldly terrors. But adulthood saw Sam drift away from these preternatural activities, instead choosing to settle down in a life of domestic bliss with his girlfriend. But when the Winchesters' dad goes missing, both Dean and Sam know what they have to do, leading to some epic cross-country trips as the brothers try to find their father. Naturally the ghostly spirits that haunt them throw more than a few obstacles in their way in this first season of episodes from the show.

I watched this show from the very first episode because its premise caught my attention and was pleasantly surprised by just how good it turned out to be. The two actors who play the Winchester brothers play very well off of one another and have great chemistry. Jensen Ackles, who plays the older brother is really the break out star of this show as his performances are outstanding. On the surface he appears to be little more than the smart ass big brother who simply wants to hunt down and destroy any supernatural creature he possibly can. It doesn't take long for us to see that Sam (the youngest) is not the only compassionate brother. They both want to find their father and avenge their mother's death as well as help others along the way. Add the character of the father to the mix and things get even more interesting. This show is not just about two demon-hunting brothers. It also skillfully explores the complicated relationship not only between the brothers, but between the brothers and their father as well. Supernatural only gets better and better as the season progresses and has become much more than just a monster of the week show. Every episode has wonderful, witty dialogue and unlike some other 'generic' horror/sci-fi shows targeted at younger audiences, Supernatural purposely tries to be different and to stand out from the crowd (and succeeds). By the end of this first season, I was completely enthralled by the storylines and looked forward to the show every week. The action only gets better and better until the season finale that leaves you wondering, what are the Winchesters going to do next and how will they possibly top this in season 2? I watched the pilot for this show and was actually surprised at how good it was. I had not seen many tv shows that were actually scary but this one made me turn the light on. Actually recommended the show to someone who (like myself) is a big horror movie fan and they loved it too. The family business is hunting supernatural forces. It all started when a woman is consumed by a fire on her bedroom ceiling, her husband goes looking for the force that killed her. Once their 2 kids grow up it is assumed they will all work together. But the youngest kid goes to college while his dad and brother are out there saving the world one person at a time. When dad goes missing and the youngest brother's girlfriend dies the same way as their mom, the two brothers join forces to figure out what is after their family. The pilot is awesome, the next couple of episodes are pretty good as well. But after a few episodes it gets kinda repetitive and old. I am sure this is not what happens to everyone, but I am over the show and have no plans to watch the next season. Still, THIS dvd set is a nice addition to your collection - especially if you like shows like The X-Files. Both shows have great scripts and good production values.
