Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (DVD, 2006)

I would actually give this movie a rating of 'Really Good' instead of just good. I enjoyed the first version, since I saw it in the movie theatre as a kid and marveled at Superman facing three villians from his home planet with the same powers. This version, the Richard Donner vision, tells the story a little better and has some wonderful scenes that were not part of Richard Lester's Superman II. Most of the scenes Donner has replaced from the Lester version, take up about half the movie so it is almost as if you are watching a completely different Superman II. The dvd has some great deleted scenes, as bonus material, that were also never put back into the movie. There is also a new introduction from Richard Donner about this version.
The movie is worth watching alone for the inhanced color, sound, and Brando scenes that were never used in the first release. The sound effects are much better as well. One example is from the Lester version, Non, one of the villians that is a mute, makes whimpering sounds in one or two scenes from the first version. They have cut those sounds from this movie as well as other snippets that did not help the first one in my opinion. So you also get great sound effects and what I think to be a better definition of the characters through this movie.
If you have never seen Superman II I would recommend watching both versions and see which one you like best. Growing up with the first version for twenty-five years, it was surprising to see how Donner filmed a few scenes, but a nice surprise to a wonderful sequel. It's a movie, have fun.

I was interested in this version after hearing about it from a friend, and I have to say The Donner Cut is a MUCH better film! There is more realistic interaction between Clark and Lois. Spoiler: Lois learns Clark's secret but the reveal in The Donner Cut is 10 times the scene Lester's is!
The only thing I would warn is that this movie, although 80% + complete is composed of many angles of the original shoot and some Screen Test material that had been filmed. So the film is far from perfect, but I do believe that if The Donner Cut had been allowed to be completed at the time, the Superman francise would be astronomical! I very highly recommend buying this DVD!

Richard Donner shines as director of his version of the sequal of his Superman movie which no one ever saw. Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, Terrance Stamp pull this version of with flying colors. New sceens, new plot directions, new visions. Well done Mr. Donner!!!

if gunshot donner scene where superman reveals his identity to lois was done for the actual movie released to the public, it would of been a more powerful movie. instead they had clark have his hand in the fire for 1/2 a second. since the human skin can take the heat of a fire for a brief period without scolding this scene in the original movie made no sense at all. it just wasnt well thought out. all taken the together the donner version is a more adult version of superman 2. i highly recommend it.

I have ALWAYS been a HUGE fan of the Christopher Reeve Superman. I watched these films over and over and over. So, when I learned there was another version of the second movie that I had never seen, I knew I had to get it. If you are a fan, you have to see this. Even if you don't like it (I did like it), the historical perspective is something you will appreciate.

Lots of people seem to believe that this sequel is better than the original and I am one of them. Throughly enjoyed this movie.

i was overall totally happy with the whole process.the sellers where good people to deal with and i was very happy with the product i bought.

I like how Richard Donner has restored most of his footage, and has made Superman II more exciting and directly to the point. I like how he finishes the movie with him going back in time, it makes everything work well, where Richard Lester leaves some things open.
The thing I didn't like too much, was how there wasn't a fighting scene in the Fortress of Solitude near the end of the movie.
I wanted to buy this movie because I absolutely love Superman! I have all of the Christopher Reeve Superman Movies in English and in German except for this one in German. I wanted to buy it to see how Superman II was meant to be.

Superman II has been known from one point of view for so long now. Now you can enjoy a different perspective fo the story. Richard Donner continues his vision of Superman as his story continues straight into Supreman II. You'll see how I & II were originally meant to be seen one after the other. This is a must have for 'real' Spuerman fans.

I was hoping that this would be different than the original theatrical release. It was. And I was VERY disappointed. Not only did the Donner cut lack the excitement that the original release offers, but many of the scenes were poorly edited. One scene in particular, Louis finding out that Clark was in fact Superman, was thrown together using the original screen tests. BAD IDEA! It lacked the emotion of the theatrical version. Of course, this is the Richard Donner cut. What Donner should've done was add the important and exciting scenes to the theatrical release. That definitely would have worked. I guess Donner was in need of cash, so he wasted my time and money with this rubbish of a cut.

One word describes this film--Majestic. It has added scenes, retouched FX, and of course, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman. When you watch this film, the other one pales in comparison.The othe film had a lot of dorky slapstick humor, almost an insult to the characters. The 3 villains are a lot more menacing, and the escape from the Phantom Xone ties in nicely with the first film. The amount of work involved with this project is nothing less than super. Old film and audio had to be sorted, restored, remastered. Definitely a must for any Superman fan.

A lot of different scenes make this interesting. I wish Donner had a chance to make it the way he wanted since some shots are computerized and screen tests, but it is worth watching for any Superman fan. A different take on a great movie. Very enjoyable

This is what should have been released all those years ago. Back then, Superman II was the best, this blows the orignal out of the water. Of course, people used to all the new computer animations will make a point about the special effects. BUt heck, this movie in any form is still a few years shy of being 30. Great version of a already good movie.

The movie was very interesting with Added Marlon Brando footage. It was a totally different Superman II. This was a better Superman II.
