To all buyers that loved the death of superman series, reign of supermen, this animated version of the death of superman is NOTHING like the comic book series, its a VERY !!!!VERY!!! BIG disapointment!!!!!! the storyline is competely ruined, it is nothing like it has been advertised, this DVD is nothing but a big hype, its a solo storyline, OH yeah it shows doomsday and superman fight and him die but thats about all , the storyline is complpetely changed, its the same old storyline with super man and lex luthor just like the animated tv series, no other heroes fighting doomsday, and doomsday is in it for only about 10 mins and you never see him again, this DVD is really made for kids, the comic book version(storyline) puts this dvd movie to shame, there is no cyborg superman , no superboy, no eradicator and no steel, no justice leaugue fighting on after superman dies, i waited for this dvd to come out and had hope the animated version would have done the comic book storyline justice, to tell you the truth, i wouldnt even sell it on ebay, im going to give it to my 8 yr old boy , because if i dont, im throwing it away in the trash, if your a big fan of the death of superman story line , your really going to be dissapointed, its not worth buying, i would recommed renting it out, and see for yourself, SHAME ON YOU DC COMICS YOU RUINED A EXCELLENT STORYLINE, MARVEL ANIMATED CARTOONS LIKE IRONMAN AND DOCTOR STRANGE RECENTLY RELEASED, BLOWS THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN AWAY

Now I loved, The Death of Superman, graphic novel too, but come on! what fun would it be to make the new animated movie EXACTLY, word for word the same as the graphic novel. The animated movie is not The Death of Superman, it is Superman: Doomsday. Every fan of Superman, and of good movies, don't be put off by these Superman: Doomsday haters, they're just disapointed because the movie wasn't going buy the book at all. The creators are very talented, and decided it would feel stale to use the same old characters and story as The Death of Superman. Bruce Timm and all the other creatve staff on Superman: Doomsday specifically said this is targeted at adults. And personally I thought it was awesome, with a fresh story, high impact action sequences, and I would recomend it to anyone!

  Doomsday??

I bought this movie and was so excited to watch it. As I did, I began to hear my heart break as a classic comic book was destroyed! (Did we get the same writers as X-Men 3 to destroy another classic franchise?) Doomsday is in less than one-third of the movie and Lex is the real bad guy. Now I have nothing against Lex, but not in this storyline. The makers should apologize, for their mistake and remake the movie. The Justice League should have been in it and wasn't. I heard they didn't have time, but really...you have time when you stop making up other storylines. A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!! The first time I've cried in years......

Good superman cartoon but doesn't follow the comic book

the movie has good action superman getting a good beating by dooms day and the superman clone. the figures have too square of faces, but other than that good animation. doesn't follow the comic books very well and u wont see any of the funeral for a friend except for the s statue, and u wont see any of jla vs doomsday either. so this makes it an average cartoon. Personally i thought it might follow the comic book saga alittle better than it did

I LOVED LOVED This movie!!! It is about time that Clark Kent gets the woman of his dreams.. No more drama keeping them apart.. This is worth buying if your are a TRUE SUPERMAN FAN!! It is also about time Lex Luthor gets a hit or two... I wish the Movie, Superman Returns had more romance between him and Lois but maybe Part 2 whenever that comes out

Pushes the envelope in its interpretation...

Superman: Doomsday (2007)

Directed by:

Lauren Montgomery, Bruce W. Timm, and Brandon Vietti

14 years after, arguably, the most publicized and grieved “death” in the comic book industry, comes the first PG-13 direct-to-video animated adaptation of “The Death of Superman” entitled Superman: Doomsday.

Directed by Lauren Montgomery, Brandon Vietti, and Bruce Timm (the latter who was also responsible for other animated projects such as: Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited), Superman: Doomsday is an unprecedented animated movie having been conveyed a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America for its action violence. Superman: Doomsday pushes the envelope in its interpretation of the death of the Man of Steel, his rebirth, and eventual ascension back as the guardian of the city of Metropolis.

Actors James Marsters (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Adam Baldwin (Turistas) take over from Superman: The Animated Series voice talents’ Clancy Brown and Tim Daly and give a “new voice” to the maniacal and cunning Lex Luthor and Superman. Actress Anne Heche (Six Days Seven Nights; Psycho (1998); and Men In Trees) seems to also hold her own as reporter Lois Lane.

Overall, if you are willing to divest yourselves from established comic book cannon, this DVD is highly recommended!

Not just a horrible comic adaptation, a horrible movie
Review created: 09/08/08

The comic book death and resurrection of Superman was an all time best seller.
The Superman Animated series and Justice League cartoons were timeless and endearing.
This movie is related to those in name only and pales in comparison.

None of the characters are endearing or likeable, the animation style is rigid and unfeeling, and for being a title character Doomsday is hardly in the movie. It's so sterile and so little is explained through the narrative that it's really hard to care about anything going on in the film.

Quite possibly the worst superman movie made to date.

Not like comic, but, excellent movie.

I loved the movie & his coming back from the "dead" was explained much better than the comics. It made more sense. In other words, he didn't really die, but, was in a "death-like" coma. In the comics, he died, but, was resurrected to life. Sorry, but, only God & Christ can resurrect the dead! So, the movie makes more sense. And, all of you people who are disappointed because the movie was NOT like the comics, better not watch the "Smallville" series on TV. THAT is the BIGGEST load of crap to be put on TV!! It does NOT come even CLOSE to what the comics say. According to THAT stupid show, EVERYONE Clark Kent(Superman) has known in his life has come to Smallville. WRONG!! WRONG!! & should I say it:WRONG!! NO WAY has ALL of these people been to Smallville in the comic version. The writers are CRAZY, NUTS, LOONEY, & ready for the straight jacket!! And, Metropolis is NOT in Kansas, a short distance from Smallville. It is in New York State, just like Gotham City. Anyway, back to the movie, it was great! Later folks

  Disaster
Review created: 10/19/07(updated 01/02/08)
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

You know, I've been waiting for this movie since I saw it advertised. Yes, I think that the epic comic book story was fantastic. About 2 minutes into the movie, I realized that it was not going to be like the comic book at all.

>sigh<

Ok, I thought.... I'll just watch it for the movie that it is, and try not to compare it to the comic book at all.

It was difficult, but, I did. I was able to seperate the movie from the comic book story.

So, what does that mean? This movie was boring. Yes, it's got a great fight... but, it's long...uninteresting... and just a horrible time watching it.

Even the fighting isn't fun. It is just vicious, and nothing much to attract you. Once Superman and Doomsday are finished dancing, it slows down to a crawl. The story line could have been better... I mean they do make an attempt at how Superman came back from the dead, but, by that point the viewer doesn't care!

The art isn't that hot in this, either. It's very stiff looking. There's too many lines, and it makes it look like it was thrown together at the last second.

There's one collapse of a building that kind of looks like one of the Twin Towers falling. I'm sure it was unintentional, however, its vision was disturbing.

As far as the extras are concerned:
The Superman/Doomsday game on the disk is as much fun as the movie. Mind you, that's not saying much.
The documentaries are "ok", nothing special.

Do not buy this movie. If you really want to see it, rent it and be done with it.

Sure, I could say something like, "DC should be ashamed of itself" or "Louise Simonson (writer of the comic book story) should be upset about what they did to her story," but I'm sure that they're going to make a bit of dough on this disaster of a movie..... so don't feel bad for them.

I'm begging DC to try again.... And the next time, get it right. It was kind of a slap in the face to the devoted fans of Superman and comics in general. "Boo" on anyone associated with this movie.

Though it didn't follow the book it did come close. The absence of any other caped crusader in the movie is a serious flaw, but overall,it's good.

  When Superman dies...,
Review created: 07/10/09
by:

The first in a line of straight to DVD animated features adapted from classic DC stories, Superman: Doomsday re-tells the much maligned Death of Superman saga from the early 90's in animated form, and despite what many of the negative reviews here say otherwise, it works. The Man of Steel (voiced by Serenity's Adam Baldwin) is in love with Lois Lane (voiced quite stiffly by Anne Heche) and both are enjoying their relationship, until his world is rocked by the arrival of the murderous creature Doomsday, who is inadvertantly let loose by Lex Luthor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James "Spike" Marsters). If you've read the comics, you know what happens next, but the animated feature wisely ignores the Reign of the Supermen part of the arc, in place of an imposter created by Luthor, which results in an apocalyptic showdown. Being the first in a line of newly animated features, don't go into this expecting something among the lines of the DC animated series' that had come before it. The animation itself looks similar to what we've seen before (veteran animator Bruce Timm is heavily involved here), but the tone is noticibly different. The voice acting is solid (Marsters is magnificent as Luthor, while Baldwin is servicable as Superman) and the action is nicely orchestrated as well, all of which makes Superman: Doomsday an animated treat. This new two-disc edition has a few new features, including episodes from the underrated 90's Superman animated series, but there isn't anything else here that really warrants getting double-dipped for.

Review created: 09/16/08

Superman vs Doomsday is an action packed animated adventure. The fight between the both of them is just epic beyond proportions, and the animation is spectacular. This movie flows pretty well, but it might not be suitable for children under 10(violence). Overall, It's worth the buy and seeing more than once.

  Superman's Death Movie
Review created: 06/21/08
by:

I bought the movie for my 5 years old son. He love it, I have to say, It's a cartoon movie so any kid likes cartoon movies.
I saw the movie, in my opinion the movie doesn't follow the original history, after superman's death, you never see superman cyborg, superboy.
I am disappointed with this film. Maybe the next superman's death is going to be better.
