Album Notes SUNRISE is a newly remastered, expanded two-CD version of THE SUN SESSIONS. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, acoustic guitar); Scotty Moore (electric guitar); Sonny Trammel (steel guitar); Leon Post (piano); Bill Black (bass); Jimmy Lott, Johnny Bernero (drums). Producer: Sam C. Phillips. Compilation producers: Roger Sermon, Mikael Jorgensen. Engineers include: Sam C. Phillips. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Originally released as 1975's THE SUN SESSIONS, SUNRISE is a two-disc compilation of early Elvis Presley material that showcases his work at Sam Phillips' Sun Studios. Here, one can hear the seeds of rock and roll being sown by this son of the South whose extraordinary range belied the fact that he was a self-taught musician. Presley's musical loves are apparent: Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup ("That's All Right"), bluegrass legend Bill Monroe ("Blue Moon Of Kentucky") and R&B artists Junior Parker ("Mystery Train") and Roy Brown ("Good Rockin' Tonight"). The team of guitarist Scotty Moore and bass player Bill Black provided an excellent base for Presley's vocals which oozed like honey on slower fare such as "Blue Moon" and "Harbor Lights" and snarled when tackling faster material such as "Just Because." SUNRISE now includes a number of previously unreleased live and studio acetates of covers ranging from a melancholic take on Jimmy Wakely's "It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You" to spirited readings of songs more closely associated with Big Joe Turner ("Shake, Rattle & Roll") and Laverne Baker ("Tweedle Dee"). Reviews 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. This is a "must have" for anyone wanting to hear the evolution of one of the Great Voices of the 20th Century, before he was turned into a freak by Col. Tom Parker and the Media. In some cases, it is a contradiction between the flawless voice and the out-of-tune Kay guitar. The progression to the controlled studio recordings proves that Evolution is real! The talents represented here are incredible, including the guitar work of Carl Perkins, as well as "Scotty & Bill". I was somewhat surprised that so many of these tracks were actually recorded at Sun, since I only previously knew of them from being released on RCA. The main things I didn't like were the noises from the poorly preserved originals (unavoidable), and a racial slur heard during some of the verbal dialogue (typical of the era, but still unnecessary, especially considering that the next US President will no doubt be a member of this particular ethnic group). Overall, a B+. Review ID: 10000000007784494 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
