Album Notes Recorded, mixed, and ready for release within a matter of hours, Sunglasses After Dark is the eponymous live album that closed the band's career, yet captures them at their very peak of their powers. Performing in front of an invited audience of 150 or so friends and fans, its 18 tracks drive like demons through the band's career, from their still riotous debut "Swamp Baby" (from the Blood on the Cats psychobilly compilation), through the mock Gothic menace of "Morbid Silence" -- heralded here by a violin and drum intro straight out of whichever black-clad pit of pretension you want to drop it into -- and on through such eternal favorites as "Black Radio," "Sex Fiend," and "At the Hop." Then, of course, there's "Mental Geezer" and "Hell Hag Shuffle," two of the finest hoedowns in the entire psychobilly canon. Too unconventional to truly capture their market's imagination (they didn't even hire a bassist until the eve of the breakup!), Sunglasses After Dark nevertheless represent the psychobilly scene at its most dementedly vivacious and this, their sole long-playing testament, captures them with the madness amped up all the way. Essential listening! ~ Dave Thompson
