Though there are nods to other instruments on WHEN THE SUN IS THE MOON, guitar, pumped-up, layered, and swirling, predominates on this gifted Oakland trio's debut album; its singer-songwriter and eponymous leader Hudson Bell previously released two solo albums. Bell's New Orleans roots give his songs a particularly romantic, angst-laden world view, which is framed by an insistent rock attack on the Velvets-like "Atlantis Nights," and delicately shaded by acoustic guitar filigree on the dreamy "Sea Horse."
