Synopsis Twelve-year-old Patty Bergen is a lonely girl growing up in a small Arkansas town during World War II. Ignored by her parents, Patty is desperate for the company of someone who will treat her with kindness and respect. When she discovers an escaped German prisoner of war, Patty, a Jewish girl, sees him as a person, rather than an enemy, and gives him shelter.
