If, as Huey Lewis once asserted, it really is "hip to be square," then this is the hippest disc on the planet. SUMMER OF '78 is an album of '70s cover tunes on which Manilow avoids easy prey like the Philly International "Me And Mrs. Jones"-style material and heads straight for the heart of the '70s: top-40 fodder like Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" and Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch." Manilow's homey, boy-next-door vocal style personalizes many of these songs. He pays them respect. While a legion of postmodern rock bands has trivialized songs like these with ironic remakes, Manilow covers them with sincerity and heart. If you need a walk on the mild side, he'll be your faithful guide.
